The best / your favourite non-dairy milk 🥛

Hello

I’d really like to cut down on cow’s milk.
I hardly drink any as it is, but always have some in the fridge.

What are your favourites?

It’s just to go in tea and coffee, and also to make porridge with.
I can envisage that it’s most tricky to find one that tastes good in tea…

Advice please!
Thank you 😊

Mine is almond milk, non sweetened

FannyCornforth Thu 27-Apr-23 05:17:16

‘Morning Ken, thank you smile

I don’t like any of them, but my lactose intolerant DGS1 now advocates oat for all uses. He says it’s OK even in tea.
He really prefers unsweetened soya milk, but read there were some concerns about it for boys and decided to take no chances.

Grammaretto Thu 27-Apr-23 05:50:25

Oat milk for me.

FannyCornforth Thu 27-Apr-23 06:11:39

Thanks both.
What’s that about soya and boys Molly?

The doorstep oat milk is arguably the best!
All my 3 adult daughters say so!

He said it was something about boys and puberty. I’ve looked it up. There are lots of reports, but it says there is no conclusive evidence. Having said that, if I was a boy, I’d take no chances either.

Thanks Molly, how odd

Soya is recommended for the menopause Molly as it contains oestrogen mimics. Think they may be called pseudo-estrogens?

This is my favourite non-dairy but not available here anymore I think - though I know it's still available in Europe. May even be a Brexit thing - but honestly don't know. Just went off my local "shelves". If available near you I'd try it.

NotSpaghetti Thu 27-Apr-23 08:48:21

Think they are phytoestrogens not pseudo 🙄

Also there's evidence that soy consumption protects against prostate cancer.
I read about this is a Swedish study some years ago but here's a review:

Me too for porridge and tea. Have recently switched from Alpro unsweetened to Ocean Breeze unsweetened which I find tastes better in tea

Why not just stop having it in tea and coffee? Have proper live yogurt on your cereals if you eat them, very good for your gut bacteria.

Gs was dairy allergic so over the years had all the above types of milk. I hadn’t known there was so much choice. Think I liked almond milk best.

Norah Thu 27-Apr-23 09:38:54

Oat milk. We make it 3-4 times a week - all purpose.

Sparklefizz Thu 27-Apr-23 09:54:14

I use Good Seed Hemp Milk available in supermarkets or online. It tastes fine to me, but I have not had cow's or goat's dairy for more than 20 years. Visitors have opted to have it in tea and coffee and not complained (and my son surely would if it tasted awful).

Judy54 Thu 27-Apr-23 13:59:34

Goat's milk may be a good alternative.

I prefer almond milk too, I find oat milk leaves a flat aftertaste in my mouth. Almond Breeze is on offer at Tesco this week if you want to try it, £1.25 which is a good price for it. I don’t drink tea though, only black coffee.

My vegan DS and DiL use oat milk normally, as it's more sustainable, oats being easily grown in northern Europe. They do like almond milk but have it as an occasional treat. Almond trees are very thirsty, but many are grown in drought-prone regions.

All your post, plus oat milk is easy to make. We feed resulting oats to birds/ mix in when we make the dogs food. No waste.

I do like the no sugar almond milk, but it is an ecological disaster. So oat milk is totally fine.

Wyllow3 Thu 27-Apr-23 16:17:03

Oat milk from ModernMilkman delivered to the doorstop. Its the best oat milk I've had. I keep a tetra pack of milk for visitors just in case. Makes a nice latte: it was hardest to get used to it in tea but fine now.

Instead of yoghurt I eat a coconut yoghurt which is delicious.

BlueBelle Thu 27-Apr-23 16:18:15

Oat or soya

Amandajs66 Mon 01-May-23 11:12:46

I use Koko coconut milk, it’s the only one that I’ve found that doesn’t curdle in coffee. X
