Bring a plate to Jubilee Street party

Our estate is having a Jubilee Street party and we've been asked to bring a plate for the sharing table.
I'd love your ideas as to what to take.

It'll be outdoors. Being England we've no idea of the weather. As the invitation is just turn up with a chair and food and drink I have no idea how many will be there. Anything from 12 to 1200!!!!!

So the brief is easy to share and won't spoil if left out for a few hours. Transport is not a worry as the closed off street is a minute around the corner.

I imagine there will be the usual “beige food” in abundance ! Sausage rolls quiche pork pies samosas …….I wouldn’t know what to take though

DH has suggested multipacks of crisps, no spoilage or waste food. I'd have to take a binbag too for the packets!
I'd love to take a nice salad but keeping it fresh and serving it would be impossible.

We're doing 'bring a plate too'. I'm in charge so people are telling me what they're bringing. So far we've got offers of finger food really. Seems fine. Easy to pass around and eat. No cutlery either. Canapes, sausage rolls, smoked salmon bites etc as well as crisps and nuts. Lots of Union Jack bunting, plates, napkins, cups and table cloths. Just hoping for good weather.
Hope your event goes well pittcity.

Ooh, not nuts. I can’t eat a nut from a shared bowl since I read how many bacteria are on them from people’s unwashed hands. ?

The most successful plate I've ever seen taken to a street party was a massive pile of cheese and onion doorstep sarnies. Everyone (especially the children, teenagers and blokes) ignored the fancy little sandwiches and fiddly food and fell on them like vultures.

Very good point! Covid is not dead yet. I know I sound a spoilsport but my family was tragically hit by this this so am a bit "over-sensitive".

Sorry! This referred to Germanshepherdsmum!

Excuse me. Wot iz a sarny/ie?

Kalu Fri 13-May-22 10:19:00

People with nut allergies would be at risk Aveline

giulia a sarny is just slang for a sandwich.
A doorstep sarny is made with very thick bread, typically white bread.

Whole fresh strawberries, children love them, everybody always craves a bit of healthy food at a buffet, and they won’t spoil in the sun.

FannyCornforth Fri 13-May-22 10:35:49

I always took a couple of quiches from the co/op when we did pot lucks at work. And/or wine (before the new head ? banned it)

Is everyone writing down what they are bringing?
Otherwise, you may get a lot of the same things

Pittcity Fri 13-May-22 10:36:16

Ooh that's an idea!!!

Pittcity Fri 13-May-22 10:38:23

That reply was to the strawberries Casdon

I'm not organising as we're new to the estate and the committee have been doing this for years......??!!

lixy Fri 13-May-22 10:58:14

carrot/cucumber/sweet pepper/celery sticks.

Though I might well snitch the strawberry idea!

Witzend Fri 13-May-22 11:04:47

At the last Jubilee street do, I just took a lot of sausages on sticks - best quality sausages cut into thirds. I know they’re a well worn cliche but they do invariably go.

Also took Pimms! Big jugs of it, frequently topped up by a dd. Quite a few of our neighbours are of non-Brit origin and some are Muslim, and although I kept telling everybody there was alcohol in it, they evidently weren’t bothered. (There was plenty of non alcoholic stuff if they’d wanted it.)

My Aunt was a caterer many years ago and she always did a huge pile of chocolate dipped strawberries with the stalks on. You could could mix it up with milk, plain, white and that caramac flavoured chocolate . Easy peasy but my Aunt always said it looks good and who could resist.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 13-May-22 11:10:14

I would hijack your sausages on sticks en route!?

toscalily Fri 13-May-22 11:20:31

Tray bakes in whatever variation takes your fancy, cut into squares or oblongs.

Cheese straws.

Pittcity Fri 13-May-22 12:00:36

I knew I could count on GN for good ideas.
Now just praying for good weather unlike the last Jubilee!

Chardy Fri 13-May-22 12:00:41

Please label meat and fish sandwiches and quiches as such. Ditto if the food 'contains nuts'.

My neighbour made a fabulous Pavlova last street party. It lasted about 5 minutes, and we still talk about it!

HowVeryDareYou Fri 13-May-22 12:07:16

Cakes. Fairy cakes, chocolate cornflake crispy thingies, scones, muffins, any/all of those.
