An author or authoress who most epitomises your home patch

Sorry to get off to a bad start Yammy, but it really is just 'author'.

Jimmy McGovern is a wonderful writer and producer. He is famous for films Hillsborough Dockers Priest Sunday. To name just a few including television series the most recent Time The Street going back a bit Cracker The Lakes Brookside. His writing is endless with such clarity and grit and engaging.

He has written so much for theatre and won numerous awards for his outstanding work. Brought up in Liverpool from a working class back ground I think it puts heart into his writing. People in Liverpool do get passionate about what they believe in and stand their ground. I am bias I admire him and his work so much but then I would because I’m Liverpudlian.

Nobody writes much about my neck of the woods!

Don't be sorry you would have enjoyed being my teacher or lecturer and got through a lot of red pens I'm dyslexic.

Well my favourite author is Barbara Pym, but she doesn’t write about where I’m from.
What I like about her is her dry wit, her splendid observations of people’s quirks and the minutiae of their daily lives, and her immaculate use of the English language.

Fanny we really don’t need you to lecture us. If you want to point out that some women object to being called authoresses, actresses or bus conductresses instead of a gender-neutral term, then just say so.

I suppose the nearest Derby has are Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine albeit being more Staffordshire/Nottinghamshire. I did grow up next to the street where they filmed parts of Cathy Come home though. Doesn’t get much closer than that I guess!

Authoress is a perfectly correct term to use.

They're a bit dated now but Richard Llewellyn (How Green was my Valley) and Alexander Cordell (Rape of The Fair Country and many others). How Green was my Valley was a bit romanticized but both authors described how the beautiful valleys of South Wales were smothered by the waste from mining and steel industries and the dreadful conditions experienced by the workers. Alexander Cordell is more gritty but his books describe lots of the traditions of the area and ways of life that are long gone.

Apologies accepted Fanny, I did check before I used the term because unfortunately, it does not show on a spell check. My maternal family are blighted by the condition my own DD and GD have it as do a lot of cousins and relis going way back.
We all joked that a member of the family wrote like James Joyce, A stream of consciousness with no punctuation though Joyce could spell.
