Ducks in the garden!

I've got a small town garden that is about 100m from a canal and this year a duck nested under a lavender bush in my rockery. About three weeks ago 15 tiny ducklings appeared and we spent the day worrying about how were they going to get back up to their nest (we put extra boxes on the steps to give them a boost) and if they had enough water and should we feed them and how do we get them down to the canal. All that worrying was pointless of course, Mrs Duck had it all sorted and by the next morning the garden was empty...

This morning I noticed that yet another duck has decided to use our garden to nest and has been stomping around looking for a good spot. She tried the lavender bush out for size and comfort and maybe because the shells are still in place from the earlier batch she tried to settle in the top of the bush! No amount of disuading by OH would shoo her out of the garden so we are resigned to another family of ducks and to tip-toeing around our garden for fear of disturbing a nesting ducky mum... do you think the word is out that our garden is THE place to nest?

We had a duck's nest in our front garden a couple of years ago. The duck laid one egg before being chased away - presumably by one of the huge tribe of local moggies that stalk our garden. I was really looking forward to seeing what would happen! As it happened - nothing but a very cold abandoned egg sad

We do get cats from time to time but the first lot managed OK... I think we were able to disuade the latest duck from nesting - the daft bird wanted to use the top of the lavender bush and I was concerned that she would ruin it so OH went out did some gentle shooing...the duck just stared at him and then turned and sauntered off to the back of the garden and we haven't seen her since... smile

Lucky Mollie,

Ducks we had, eggs laid then the eggs were nobbled by Magpies despite our best efforts.
