There's a funny smell in the Dingly Dell

But the pixies aren't washing their socks. It's vaguely bovine not quite manurish. Early yesterday morning I wandered to the window with my cup of tea and saw something eating the roses. Bloody big rabbits I though. DH will be livid. Realised they were deer and I wasn't wearing my glasses. Does anyone know if they spray to mark territory? I'm wondering if it could be that. It is noticeable in the heat today.

Not sure if the spray as a cat does....but they do scent mark from glands on their heads....or at least some deer do.

Oh deer...!

Brave deer walzing into your garden, full of deering-do?

merlotgran Sun 16-Aug-15 20:35:46

You need a game plan grin

Katek Sun 16-Aug-15 20:37:46

Don't think they spray as such, but they do leave scent markings from their head when they rub off bark and also have scent glands in their feet.

At least you've got out of the usual Sunday rut. confused

You got me curious - the only reference I can find is that they smell a bit like a cow barn. Sort of musky, mothballs smell. It's from their urine. Bucks give off the musky smell from their anal glands when they're rutting in the autumn.

You did ask!

Have you got foxes!

Grandma2213 Sun 16-Aug-15 22:08:29

Don't know the answer but some of the GNers' comments have made me giggle (groan!) tonight. I have heard that venison burgers are becoming quite popular - just a thought!

gringringringrin thank you all for the terrible puns. Might even let DH see this thread. NFK you must be right . I have rabbits doing siflay on the lawn, badgers digging for worms, foxes leaving spreints and now I've got deer peeing over the roses.

grin Ithought I felt something wet trickling down my back , Stansgran!

rosesarered Mon 17-Aug-15 10:32:13

I thought it may have been rain deer.

merlotgran Mon 17-Aug-15 10:36:56

What do you call a blind stag?

No eyedeer

What do you call a blind stag with no legs?

Still no eyedeer

The last bit's very rude so I won't go any further grin

Katek Mon 17-Aug-15 13:05:28

' Damn,' she said roe-fully, 'I wanted to hear that!!'

Ana Mon 17-Aug-15 13:15:57

I wish I'd herd it too!

merlotgran Mon 17-Aug-15 13:17:55

I'd have to high tail it out of here.

Katek Mon 17-Aug-15 13:28:06

Katek Mon 17-Aug-15 13:36:07

There is some kind of fertilizer which farmers put on their fields at this time of the year. There has been a horrible smell here since last week, for miles around. It used to have Xs in the name - Triple X or Six X or something, but I have no idea what they use now. The pong usually settles after rain. I hope this happens for you.
