We have this shrub growing up a trellis to mask a path to back garden. About 3 or so years old, has grown well and looks (or did) look lovely.

Aghast to see the other day it has seemed to die off all of a sudden. Just looked it up, and apparently susceptible to frost and cold winds, which we have had quite a bit lately.

Do you think it will pick up now the better weather is coming, we hope? Should we trim it down?

It has been so attractive, will be upset if it’s a goner. Should have fleeced it of course, but not been a problem previous winters.

If it was me I would hang fire and pray! Those winds a couple of weeks ago were so cold and an unusual angle.

We have had a beautiful hydrangea in our garden in a prominent position for years. Recently noticed it’s dying off so I gave it a good prune in the hope of encouraging some growth. It’s the first time this has happened you might want to try pruning your shrub. It’s worth a try at least.

Bad luck! It must like its position to have thrived so well for 3 years. I've had no luck with this at all. I'd leave it for a bit and see what happens. Can you try breaking off a small sprig somewhere to see whether there's green wood still?

I thought it was a Harry Potter spell until I saw it was in gardening.

Leave it alone for a while. Plants can be very good at coming back even if it takes time.

I had to look up its name on the card which luckily I had attached to the trellis vampirequeen.

Thanks for all advice, I think I will wait and see if it picks up.

We bought it reduced in price end of season, my choice, and I have been so proud of my bargain!

Probably a goner - but might pick up if you're lucky. I had one I took (stole!) a cutting from a garden in West Cork - (mild climate). It lasted a couple of years, but then died. Where I live, south midland Ireland, it's colder!
