I transcribe records for a free to use site and today I was working on the 1871 Census for a small Somerset village.
Head of the family is one John Chalker, occupation listed as Cemetery Mason, Marble. His wife Amelia has her occupation as "Slave to rest of the family" lol.
They had five children aged from 10 months to 8 yrs so I think she was spot on.

I like it!

I have a record in my family, for 1871, and have never seen one like it. My great-great grandfather, in Glasgow at the time, as well as describing himself as 'Glass Bottle Manufacturer Employing 28' added the word '^Parent^' to his occupation on the census...
....and there are certain clues that there were a lot of problems with his family at the time!

That was supposed to be italics.

This little gem of a notice in an C1850s Birmingham newspaper made me feel quite sad. It was just one of those things I happened upon searching for something else.

Transcript
Strayed, a small RED BARREN COW, up-horned, with milk about her. Whoever will bring her to Mr Rogers, Horse and Jockey, Digbeth, shall be handsomely rewarded.
