I've done a bit of Googling and as Paddyann says, if the baby lived even a brief time, there should be registration certificates.

If he was sadly stillborn, there is something called the Stillbirth Register. Sensitive link. www.gov.uk/register-stillbirth

Apparently copies of the latter certificates are only issued to the parents of the child concerned, or, if the parents are deceased, any siblings.

Phoning the likely registry offices might be productive.

Maybe ask a family member .. the oldies usually know about such stories ..

Thanks paddyann , I was told he lived a short while but I'm not sure that information is reliable. I'm sure if there had been a birth or even death certificate it would have been found years later. I haven't even got a year of birth but I suspect 1946/7.
I really don't know why it has suddenly become important to me after all these years.

stillbirths aren't given a birth certificate ,if he lived even a few minutes there will be one.Good luck finding it

hildajenniJ and SueDonim, thank you both very much. I will certainly take a look at the links.
Oh and hildajenniJ , I notice that you live where my late mother in law was born almost 100 years ago.

Andyf I'm sorry you lost your family so very young.

As you know your parents' names, you might be able to find your brother here, although you would need to send away for a birth/death certificate.

Ah, sorry, Andyf. I must read properly before replying!
Anyway, lots of luck, hope you can find the details. smile

Here's a contact that may be helpful if the baby was stillborn: www.familytreeforum.com/content.php/374-Stillbirth?#comments
Good luck with your search.

Thanks missadventure but the brother died at birth or soon after. So it's not that I'm looking for him, I would just like to know his name (if he was given one) and any other details that were registered.

I've heard that Facebook can be an excellent source of finding people. I think the red cross can also help? Good luck!

I was orphaned at the age of three (my father died before I was born). I was brought up by my widowed grandmother who thought that if she didn't talk to me about my parents then I'd soon forget.
I found out, in later years, that I would have had an older sibling (a boy I think). He died either at birth or hours later.
My question is, how can I find out any details? Surely he would have been registered somewhere, I would have thought that stillbirths had to be registered.
My only information is surname and parents names.
