Ancestry suubscription due to expire

I have just a couple of weeks till my ancestry sub expires. It will be £120. If I don't renew, will I still have access to my tree, all the censuses, BMD info etc? I don't know how to save it all somewhere else, or just print It all off.
Any advice appreciated. Perhaps move the lot to find my past or somwhere?

I’m a member of a group on Facebook and many members have advised that they have saved up to half the annual fee for Ancestry by not renewing, waiting a week or so, and then activating a special offer code. There’s a website that you can keep an eye on which lists all the latest offers. Try googling genealogy discounts. I am also led to believe that if you don’t renew your tree is still there and you can search, but you can’t view document images or save things.

If you ever want to save a copy of the facts of your tree you should create a gedcom file - the facility is in the ‘manage my tree’ menu. You can upload that to almost any family history programme.

Good luck!

You cannot view any saved copies of census etc, I learnt that myself. So I then renewed for a month and saved all the documents to my computer, then printed them off just in case anything went wrong with that!
You can still see your tree but that's about all.

Hi I have saved my tree to a gedcom today, but my Apple mac book pro cannot open it because there is no available application that can open it.
I'm sorry I got this laptop as I am struggling to get used to it.
Any suggestions?

mrsmopp I’m not sure but can’t you download the Ancestry App and access it? Or have you cancelled your Ancestry subscription?

mrsmopp I wondered the same because I think I have got as far as I can with research and now want to collate it into some sensible and readable form - but will I lose access to all my work?

I think I must do what Massimo suggested which I had done once before with a very old file which is unreadable on my new pc unfortunately. And also get printing!

Stock up on printing ink then jalimall, I’m at a similar stage to you although with the 1939 census out I’m finding a lot more info on my relatives.
I’ve masses of files and I have been shown how to do the FT so that it is acceptable to other Genealogy groups, also the Gedcom file has been downloaded.
However, I’ve also scanned in every photo and certificate I have at home onto the Ancestry site so that if anything happens to my paperwork, then I know I have back up on the website. But as the fees are rising I’m thinking of stopping the subs next time.
On another note, I’ve also scanned in all of our family photos and put them onto CDs and given to the DDs, again ‘just in case’. Took me months!

No, I've still got the app but my subscription ends soon alter which I'm not sure what I will be able to access. I did the gedcom thing on the laptop but I can't even open it.
I wil have to get stuck in on the printing.
I'm annoyed that apple won't access the gedcom.grrrr

Have you actually seen a gedcom file? I was surprised when I looked at it. It isn’t like we see it on the Ancestry screen, mine is a long list of dates and names, it only becomes a familiar Tree when it is downloaded onto another site. Unless it’s changed, it was a while ago that I downloaded mine and I need to redo it.

mrsmopp if you google the Apple/ gedcom file problem there are several answers and other questions on there which might prove useful for Apple Mac users.

Don't know if this helps explain things - found by googling.

Situpstraight I have printed out quite a lot over the years so perhaps there won't be much more - however, it is a case of sorting it all out and deciding what exactly is needed (everything?)

Situpstraight Tue 24-Apr-18 23:22:46

I’m with you there jalimall I’ve got scraps of paper in files that I darent get rid of. All filled with very important info, most of which I can’t make head nor tail of. I shall sort it in the winter.
I’m better with ancestors that I don’t know and have never met, I’m from a large family and I find it hard some days to do searches on my lost loved ones.

It's so long since I researched some of it and filed it carefully that I need a refresher course before I write up the histories. Probably I will just concentrate on one or two lines of each main family although there are one or two rather interesting side stories!

This is a site that might be of use.

My friend wanted to leave Ancestry she chose The free ancestry site the Latter Day Saints, I think it is commonly know as family search but not sure. You would have to join and then download from Ancestry using gedcom and then uplink to the free site using gedcom.

I would do this but I am anxious about loosing data.

I use Tribalpages. You can download your ancestry tree as a GED and then upload it to Tribalpages. A basic tree is free or a bigger ad free one is reasonably priced.
You then have your tree on a website which you can limit access to with a password....great for sharing your discoveries with family.
It saves the sources but not the documents themselves. You need to download and save these before your ancestry subscription ends.

PS. ancestry has the 1939 register free this week!

I have used the LSD site and found some very useful information on there from parish records Allygran.

They do keep all the data in a huge database in Salt Lake City !

I also found a lot of information in Tribalpages from someone who had researched DH's family very extensively.

Thanks for the tip about the 1939 register Pittcity!

I have been a member of Ancestry for many years and was disgusted to find that new members were being offered subscriptions at a knock down price. Also they were always offering free weekends too.(but not giving me any discounts for those days)My subscription was due to be renewed in may,so I have cancelled my 2019 subscription.(I ob still have use of the site till may)Then I will wait for one of their deals and reapply just before it runs out.I have a complete paper trail of my FH so not worried about losing info.
