Regularly: I have one on a Tuesday and the other two on a Wednesday after school. They usually pop in during the week too and we're close enough to help out if required. I do find it tiring and sometimes yearn to get on with my own projects if I'm really absorbed or have a deadline [I still work a day a week] but I love being part of their lives. It's Grandad they really want though - until they fall over or want something to eat grin

I see one family about six times a year for anything up to a week and the other family once a year.

Mine live an hour and a quarter away so once a fortnight during term time. They come and stay in the holidays including half terms.

Actually, I think that's about right for me. Love 'em to bits but I like my me time these days.

I see two of my granddaughters and my great-grandson every Monday. My other granddaughter every couple of weeks or so. I love it when they come and I also love it when they go away again - (I don't think that makes me a bad person)!!! grinwink

I see my two youngest every day,but their older brothers are very seldom at home and when I do see them its "hey nanna, how's it going are you cool"? they have their own set of friends at uni and are thoughtful enough
to keep in touch via phone internet or text, all in all they are nice kids,so
I class myself as being lucky to see them all so often,I obviously see thm more when finances are a bit low but that't life

I am the live in child care for my second and third GC so see them all their waking hours apart from when I am at work, and my other three GC, the two smallest I see most weekends if possible, the oldest who is 17 today is not often about as she is usually out with friends.

I see my two every Monday and Tuesday, I live in the North West and travel to London and stay overnight. I need my grandchildren 'fix' and I help out DD with housework, plus she gets a bit of self space, they are 9 months and 21 months, so sometimes she just goes to bed and sleeps in the day for a couple of hours smile

My GCs live 200 miles away. We see them about every month - six weeks. I will be seeing them a lot this summer as DIL's maternity leave ends at the beginning of the school holiday. She works three days a week and the baby will go to nursery but the older one has just left pre-school and is about to start school. DS can cover some of the school holidays as he can work from home but we will be up at least three times to help. I am really looking forward to one to one time with my GD, we will talk and sew and cook and go the museum and look at the stones

I see 3 of my grandchildren about every 18 months - they live in Sydney - thank heavens for Skype. The other 2 who are 400 and 450 miles way we see about every 3 months or so. sad

My eldest GD is in Manchester so I see her frequently. The young ones are 'down south', so I try to see them every month or so. I'm joining one family in Provence soon, as I did last year. Lovely!

We see our grandson about once a month, they lived several hours drive away. But, we see him most days on Skype, he recognises us now on the screen which is great.

I have looked after each of my 4 grandchildren for one day a week. The eldest is now 14 and the youngest is 3.3/4, and I have loved and cherished every minute of it. The day that I have had them is very special to us. We would go to the park, go on a double decker bus(a real treat for children now) in to the city and visit our Castle Museum or Cathedral. We would go to the park, the library, the supermarket or visit great grandma. If the weather was bad we would cook, paint, build dens in cardboard boxes, look for bugs in the garden, sit and read (books which I had kept from my own children) do jigsaws and play games. Recently my youngest grandchild, (a beautiful little girl, after 3 noisy rumbustious boys) and I were sorting out a drawer in which I kept nappies, bibs, baby lotions and wipes etc and I put everything which I no longer needed for her in a bag for mummy to take to a friend who had just had a baby. (Neither family want any more children) And I told her that when she went to school I would have no more little children to look after. 'But Grandma' she carefully explained 'My mummy said that ladies can have babies, so you could have one of your own'!!!! Maybe not...............!!!! I have honestly loved looking after them all, and think that we are all much closer for this experience. The three lads still come to tea once a week, its just like having a swarm of locust descending, eating everything in sight. I JUST LOVE IT grin

We pick our grandson up from pre-school on Monday afternoon. He stays over Monday night with us as we then have him all day on Tuesday when we will go swimming, or out into the country, or the local park or softplay centre, or a combination of any of the above, to the point where exhaustion cuts in (ours, not his!) We can usually manage to wangle an extra afternoon in his company later in the week also. He will be starting school in September so we will see less of him during the week, but there are always holidays to look forward to. They grow away from you so quickly these days, you have to make the most of them while you can.

My grandson is five months old and my daughter is still on maternity leave - I see them at least once a week, probably more. In October DD is going back to work and I will be having GS one day a week - I am looking forward to it with equal quantities of happy anticipation and dread! Yesterday when DD came she and her dad went out to the bank for about twenty minutes. GS was quite happy for a while and then started looking round and realised that mum wasn't in sight - cue crying (no tears, though!). DD is doing a KIT day next month (Keeping in Touch with her job) and we are having GS, so we decided that the week before the day she will come and visit every day to get him into the habit of seeing us all the time.

I used to look after two of my grandchildren three days a week so that their parents could go to work. Now the parents are getting divorced I see the children for a couple of hours every other week and I feel bereft. Perhaps I should not have got so involved in the first place but I miss them so much. It is worse when I bump into them in town with their other Nanny I hardly dare go out. sad

yogagran Fri 22-Jul-11 22:48:31

That must be so difficult for you ElseG. Just keep in touch with them as often as you can and hopefully things will improve

The youngest I see every day from Monday to Friday, as I mind him whilst my son and his wife are at work, but rarely at other times unless they need a babysitter to go out. The other 5 are growing up now and don`t seem to need to see us as often, but 2 of them come every time their parents visit us, which can be as often as twice a week or as little as once in 3 or 4 weeks.
