My grandchildren have just left and we had a lovely time. Now I have a cold - a week of wiping noses I feel!
Does everyone find this? grin

Having looked after Bertie, and his permanently runny nose, while DD3 was in hospital, I have been left with a corker too. What a thank you present!! grin

GC have had runny noses on and off for weeks. DH has had three cold sores in the last four weeks and my stomach has been sore for all of that time. This weekend starts our run of childcare and I am wondering what delights await us.

Small children seem to cultivate really infectious colds grin

nanapug Sat 06-Apr-13 22:44:15

I refer to my GC as plague rats ;)

Two of my GC always seem to have snotty noses so I think I'm now getting immune! I started out life as a teacher and hopefully gained some immunity from children - and their noses - during that brief time!

annodomini Sun 07-Apr-13 11:34:38

GC, as I've often said, are toxic. The last bug they kindly passed on to me was norovirus. However, last weekend, they were all mercifully free of snuffles, coughs and 'the runs', so cuddles were risk-free - not that I think about that when youngest GS (5) charges at me, arms outspread, as he comes through the door. Who could resist? smile

Interesting things colds. Apparently we get infected often but do not always get symptoms - or just get a slight sniffle. We gain immunity to more and more viruses all our lives. Trouble is new virus variants keep evolving.
The symptoms are caused by the immune system releasing chemicals. In young children they have very strong immune systems that react with vigour - which is why they have runnier noses, and get temperatures so easily. In middle age we react less vigorously and may, if we are lucky, only get a sniffle or mild symptoms whereas the toddler is really going for it. One of the benefits of being older.

I don't get colds - must be due to the five months of snow!

nanapug Sun 07-Apr-13 11:51:28

I wish my OH would "grow up" then as he still gets a raging temperature every time he gets a cold, and I dread it sad He is usually ill for a week and don't I know it!! He has always done this so it is normal for him, but we both dread the GC passing on their colds to him.

JessM Sun 07-Apr-13 14:08:05

Obviously a very reactive immune system nanapug grin
I think there can be a psychological element as well maybe. If i feel sniffly always tell myself that I am staying healthy and think about the things I want to do in the next few days. Nothing worse than thinking "oh good, an excuse to take time off". Well maybe.

My GC repeatedly share their bugs with us - it has been at its worst since Christmas. It is a bit of a trail as OH's PD gets worse when he gets a bug.

One DD and family have been ill for the last 6 weeks: colds, chest infections, tummy bugs, high fevers. We have tried to keep away a bit as don't want OH to get infected - but I feel bad as I should be helping them.

Glad for you that you don't get colds GreatNan. We also get plenty of snow, but the key factor is regular contact with toddlers. I get a double dose, my little neighbour is always has a snotty nose he wants to share with me ... and my grand-children as when they or we visit, it is always for 1 week or more, usually in winter. Having said that, I've escaped so far this year - let's see what happens when we look after them for 10 days soon - fingers crossed.

Greatnan Sun 07-Apr-13 16:14:22

I suppose the fact that I am rarely in face to face contact with other people might be a factor!

Mishap Sun 07-Apr-13 16:56:19

Safer to converse online greatnan!

Greatnan Sun 07-Apr-13 17:11:18

Exactly, Mishap!

Attishooo!!!

Nelliemoser Sun 07-Apr-13 18:10:39

I remember getting one bug after another for years once my kids started nursery school. I haven't been too bad in recent years though. Touch wood.

I like the plague rats term. Its like freshers flue when they get to Uni. Lots of "new bugs" from different parts of the country. That and going on the booze and late night big time.

I am one blobby germ at the moment.
