When just 2yr old DGS pulled all the toddler books off the shelf and out onto the floor I asked him what he was doing and I was told "I'm choosing a book." I should have known really but it took me by surprise.

When my son was about 3 we were in the car with my grandmother, his great grandmother, when she said "Oh look at those moo moo's," My son said,"They're not moo moos', they're cows, silly arse. I don't know where that came from - honest.

My DGS then aged 5 asked what 'instinct' meant. Explanation accepted he paused for a few minutes then asked "so what does outstinct mean". On being told I didn't think there was such a word his sister piped up saying "No. It's extinct" . Hasty retreat to kitchen for a bewildered grandma! confused

That reminds me of my sister (much younger than me) when she was little. When asked what she was doing (it was probably something she should not have been doing) she said:"This!" As you say, can't argue with that.

My 3 year old GS was proudly showing me his new shoes. I said to him " So, what size are you in now, Arthur?". He replied, very sensibly, "My size". Couldn't argue with that!

5 year old GS lost his first tooth and DD said maybe the tooth fairy would come. He wanted to know what this was and she explained. He thought for a moment, then said "No.......that's rubbish!" Bit of a rationalist this one!

We took our 5 year old grandson and his sister out one day last week (we had them for half term). We had a very busy day and when we returned home my husband and I said we needed a rest and left the children drawing at the table. My grandson asked if we had rested enough and we both said 'no'.

'Right, 5 more minutes and no 'puters if you are resting!'

When my dgd was small she was in the back of our car on a lovely summer's day as we were driving along. I pointed out a flower display as we went by and said 'look at the pretty flowers' her reply was 'for goodness sake nan, I'm 6 years old!' grin

One of the ladies at GS1's preschool stuck a magnet onto a metal table leg and said "Ooh look , it's stuck it must be magic!" to which he replied "No it isn't, it's magnetism" he then took the magnet and demonstrated what other things it would stick to . He was 4 at the time.

My 3 year old DGS told me recently when I was giving him a hug and telling him how gorgeous he was "I`m sick of being gorgeous Gran. I want to be cool"!

I got told recently. I had popped over to DD's house one morning (she lives next door). GD 2 1/2 was sitting at her child's table playing with her play dough. I said "Good morning J...," she completely ignored me. "Good morning J...," still no answer. "J.... I said good morning." She turned around looked at me for a moment and said "Mama, I busy." sad

Not likely even then, unless they were exceptionally deadly toadstools...

Only if you lick you fingers

Surely just touching toadstools wouldn't make you ill? confused

I do get the point that Fred was just in a contrary mood, but overstating the dangers of nature can make some children very anxious.

I took GS to school this morning. He didn't want to wear his coat. 'Come on Fred, you must put it on, it's cold and wintery outside'. 'No it's not Granny, it's still Autumn'. Having got the coat on, we walked passed a load of mushrooms so, in order to emphasise their danger, I said 'look at these toadstools Fred. You mustn't touch them as they may make you ill'. 'They're not toadstools Granny, they're mushrooms. He is 4. Not much hope for me then..........
