80's party

Hi thought I'd start this in the cafe for fear of being thought shallow smile.
We are invited to a birthday party with an 80's theme. I've been trying to think what I used to wear in those times. I was a young mum then so probably lived in jeans. The one thing I can remember was leg warmers (blush but they were warm!).
Anyone got any ideas?

Chewbacca Sat 04-Mar-17 20:25:22

I remember wearing dungarees a bit like this:

Think 'FAME' if you ever watched it, lots of colour, shell suits, shiny leggings with the dreaded leg warmers, light blue denim jeans and jackets, shoulder pads and big hair.

Chewbacca Sat 04-Mar-17 20:40:18

Ooh yes! I forgot about the big hair! grin

Pussycat bow neck tie blouses, and the good news is that they are back in fashion!
Not that I shall be buying one, but perfect for a party.Combine it with a Mrs Thatcher hairstyle and a handbag.smile

I have a Neighbours t-shirt (ebay) that I wore with leggings and luminous yellow legwarmers with trainers.
Harem pants are a more forgiving option.

Ana Sat 04-Mar-17 21:43:38

Harem pants? In the 80s? confused I certainly never wore them!

Mind you, I was too busy being a new mum to be much concerned with fashion but yes - shoulder pads and big hair a la Joan Collins in Dynasty and the highest heels you can wear without doing yourself a mischief! Thigh-high boots an option too...

Chewbacca Sat 04-Mar-17 21:43:57

Roses is it a good idea to go to a party dressed as Mrs Thatcher do you think! grin wink

NonnaW Sat 04-Mar-17 22:47:35

Probably best I avoid going as Mrs T I think. Big happy air is also out - I didn't have it then and I definitely don't have it now! The only other thing I could think of was ra-ra skirts - not a good option for me.
The birthday girl told us a friend had ordered a Madonna costume. I looked on eBay for 80's costumes and I think my preferred option might be to go as a yellow coat from Hi-Di-Hi.

What about punk?

You can get wash-out hair colour.
Tartan with braces?
or Grunge?
Fishnet tights

Such an inspiring era fashionwise wink

Do you remember Dexy's Midnight Runners? Baggy dungarees tied in at the waste with a big belt; bovver boots and a little hat stuck on the back of the head. can't see how this could fail

Jalima Sat 04-Mar-17 23:43:52

Definitely Kim Wilde from the link above!!

Chewbacca Sat 04-Mar-17 23:55:30

Oh lord above Jalima ! What on earth possessed us? On that link I can see several styles that I'm now embarrassed to say I owned/wore!

kittylester Sun 05-Mar-17 08:27:27

I mostly wore baby sick on everything I think.

janeainsworth Sun 05-Mar-17 08:32:54

kittygrin
I had some red and white striped pedal-pushers that had a matching top ??

Jalima Sun 05-Mar-17 09:34:25

I don't think I looked much like Kim Wilde either.
I probably threw on any old thing that was clean so that I could get the baby changed and fed, the school lunches done and two little ones fed, ready for school and out of the door without them squabbling!
It was a long old walk to school as well.

My hair may have had the 'punk' look though, more by accident than design.

Thanks everyone, some great ideas/memories there!
When we were first told about the theme DH decided he was going to go as Boy George (I think in his Culture Club heyday) - he's 67 and not as slim as he was hmm However, birthday girl has asked if he'll play a few numbers on the sax so he feels that might not now be the way to go. Whatever, I'm sure we'll have a great time.

goldengirl Sun 05-Mar-17 11:41:12

Jumpsuits! I remember wearing them to parties. Wouldn't wear them now though as I need the loo more often than I did then hmm

JackyB Sun 05-Mar-17 16:13:55

Oh, yes - I still have a shiny black satin jumpsuit which probably still even today would hide a multitude of sins.

Definitely shoulder pads.

The 1880s would be much nicer.

bumblebee123 Sun 26-Mar-17 11:59:21

Hey Chewbacca, do I remember Dexys Midnight Runners? Yup, I certainly do BUT, at first, I thought it was a new laxative. I can still remember the look on the chemists face when I went to try and buy some confused. I looked them up on the net and got a good rendition of Goodnight Eileen. Oh such memories.

Jayanna9040 Sun 26-Mar-17 17:04:10

Did we wear shirts with waistcoats over them? Or was that the 90s?

rosesarered Sun 26-Mar-17 21:00:18

Yes, you can safely go as Mrs T to the party ( it was a long time ago you know)wink although don't mention the poll tax grin
The real downside to going dressed as The Iron Lady, is that others may assume that it is just your usual look, haha.

rosesarered Sun 26-Mar-17 21:04:13

I think I wore pinafore dresses made of corduroy, jeans of course, and, umm shorter skirts than I wear now ( short kilts.....and am not even Scottish)
No big hair or shoulder pads for me, I hated them.
