Siting here at 3 in the morning with raging indigestion. Can anyone suggest any (preferably natural) remedies? Thank you all in advance - maybe I can stave off another attack if I have some weapons in my armoury smile

Andrews Liver Salts. They work very well. A couple of spoons into a glass of water, drink the fizzy result. You can feel it working as it goes down.

Spot on Twinset BUT I use "Effervescent Health Salts" from Superdrug, as the difference in price is amazing for the very same thing! Even cheaper is the same thing in Wilkinsons if you have one locally. The relief is indeed immediate. smile

Best thing for raging indigestion is a visit to the doctor. Take note of what you ate prior to the attack and whether or not you were bending over from the waist. Never ignore indigestion by relying on over-the-counter medication for long periods of time. At our age all uncomfortable symptoms should be medically examined, our bodies on the inside are not as robust as they used to be, even if we look good on the outside.

Yes Sixties.I always worry when I see all these tv adverts for various digestion medicines...(for both ends if you get my meaning) the human body is cleverly designed and should work reasonably well unless you are regularly eating some really wild stuff. Prolonged digestive problems should always be looked at!

How you feeling now gingerbread?

I use (not natural remedy don't think!) gaviscon liquid, works for me but worth keeping your eye on how/when it happens. Hope you're much improved now!

Try peppermint tea.

Ranitidine tablets, not natural remedy but they work, have tried every remedy under the sun and these are the only tablets that work. Have been told by my doctor they are safe to take long term.

Bicarbonate of soda 1 or 2 teaspoons in water drink straight down, my 2nd best remedy (natural) after Ranitidine tabs

I have pure peppermint capsules from Holland and Barrat(are we allowed to use brand names on here)!!

I have a reflux problem that caused me to have severe laryngitis. On consultant's orders, I have to take Omeprazole, Ranitidine and Gaviscon Advance! But was when the Ranitidine was added that I really noticed the difference.

Having suffered wicked indigestion [and spitting up of blood] for several months, an hiatus hernia was diagnosed. Prescribed 40mg Nexium esomeprazole which, apart from curing the hernia, has taken care of the wretched symptoms without any side-effects. Essential to consult your GP if indigestion persists.

Please visit your doctor to rule out reflux, ulcers etc. before relying on over the counter medicines.

Tilt the bed where your head and shoulders are; don't eat after about 7 in the evening ie three hours before you go to bed and yes, it is ranitidine that works by reducing the stomach acid which causes the discomfort when it strays upward so to speak. Annobel, check out the omeprazole as it might cause more problems - ask your doc again.
Peppermint tea and fennel tea are good too.

I suffer from acute reflux due to a dysfunctional stomach and severe IBS.
I require a regime of Nexium, Domperidone and Spasmonal. Also there are various foods that I can't tolerate e.g. coffee, the onion family(leeks, spring onions, garlic etc), cucumber, fatty foods, oranges, apples and fizzy drinks. I strongly recomend that you see your GP as there are various reasons for severe indigestion. You would be advised to not eat anything after 7-8pm. Also Peptac or Gaviscone liquid can be helpful. If you suffer from wind(belching) or have trapped wind, this can also cause indigestion, I have found that a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate in a little water to be helpful and if that does not work try a teaspoon of brandy!

One of my consultant's recommendations was teeth-whitening gum because it contains bicarb. It is also sugar free so is good for staving off the hunger pangs. It might even whiten your teeth though I can't say I have noticed much difference.

The key to all this and yes I am medicaly qualified, is to avoid all the foods that upset you and dont eat large portions of anything. You do have to find out for yourself. I discovered if that's the word for the horrible pain ,heartburn etc that oranges and anything orangey, oily fish and large portions of anything produced symptoms. I spent all my formative years watching both my parents and aunties and uncles swap indigestion remedies and continue to eat everything that upset them and moan about it. When I met my husband he suffered indigestion terribly and took all sorts for it. I took him off processed food and commerically baked products like biscuits and cake so he had home cooking and baking only and it seemed to be the preservatives that upset him.
I cant emphasise enough though that if you have eradicated the things that upset you and symptoms persist or if you ever throw up or pass blood get straight to your GP (old blood from higher up the gut in your stools will be black so dont ignore that either).
Wishing you all a comfie tum today.

Good advise susiecb.....I've long since learned to lay off anything with rich cream in it.....especially if part of an evening meal....I feel 'liverish' for days otherwise.

Annobel Sun 05-Jun-11 13:47:54

The list of things I can't or shouldn't eat grows longer all the time! And I don't eat meat either, so I think my family and friends are now finding me difficult to entertain.

harrigran Sun 05-Jun-11 22:03:56

I have a problem with black pepper and chilli, even the slightest trace in a meal gives me a sore tummy for days. I have a hiatus hernia so smaller meals means less discomfort.
