GLANDULAR FEVER

Has anyone else had a virus for as long as 5 weeks which has left them feeling really tired if they try to do anything exerting myself?

A friend suggested I may have had glandular fever because some people get it without all the usual symptoms.

I am going ask my GP if I can have a blood test to check if this is why I am still so lethargic. Other blood tests I have already had for high blood sugar, vitamin and iron deficiencies, cholesterol, liver and thyroid function have come back normal.

Any ideas/thoughts/reassurances would be gratefully received.

It is certainly very possible that you might have glandular fever. Most cases actually are asymptomatic - people do not have symptoms.

It sounds as if you've had a very thorough check for almost everything else. The only thing I can think to add would maybe be a test for Lyme disease, though I do not know if it is a major problem in the UK.

I am pretty sure I had glandular fever some years ago, although I did not realise it for sometime, when a doctor friend suggested that that was what I had had.

It took me nearly a year to finally throw it off, the glands in my neck were swollen for most of that time and while the constant feeling exhausted left after a month I continued to have days when I felt too weak to get out of bed. First these days were weekly but gradually spaced out to fortnightly then monthly.

DD was ill for a very long time when she had glandular fever, it was awful because she was doing her A levels at the time.

It could be glandular fever, it could be post viral fatigue .... or it could be M.E.

I have had M.E. for 30 years and in those days you needed to have had the symptoms for 6 months before you got an M.E. diagnosis. That may have changed since, but there was no specific test for M.E. so everything else had to be ruled out first.

My M.E. stemmed from glandular fever which I caught from my daughter. She did not go on to get M.E. though.

There is also post viral fatigue, which is much more minor than M.E. but can feel wretched for weeks.

I hope you soon feel better.

Monica I am still feeling like this 30 years on. This is what M.E. is like. I go back to bed most afternoons because of exhaustion.

I had a virus like that nearly three years ago. It went on for weeks. I lived on boiled eggs for ages as that was all I could face eating. I lost a fair bit of weight. I've never completely got my former strength back, although the weight ent back on when I did start eating properly again. The blood tests came back all ok. In fact the doc said they were very good. Funnily enough (not funny) my reflux started at that time.

For me it was the start of old age. I was 75 at the time.

I was unsure whether to post this, but maybe you are younger than me, and it can't apply to everyone. Perhaps you will be up and at it again very shortly. flowers

(No glandular fever involved in my case)

Sparklefizz, there is nothing minor about ME, I have a cousin who has had ME for over 40 years. At one time she was in a wheelchair, although that phase has thankfully passed, but her house has been adapted so she can sleep downstairs and there is a down stairs bathroom. You have my sympathy.

I have been prone in the past to post-viral fatigue, touch wood, I seem free of it at the moment. The worst I had, it lasted over 6 months, but usually it was 'only' 6 - 8 weeks.

Monica You haven't read my post properly, have you? I have had M.E. for 30 years, no one knows better than me that it is not minor. I have used a wheelchair in the past too.

There is a big difference between post viral fatigue and M.E. You have totally misinterpreted what I said.

Sparklefizz Thu 09-May-19 13:23:50

Apologies Monica, it is me who has done the mis-reading and became over-defensive. I am actually in the midst of an M.E. relapse so my concentration's not as good as it might be. Sorry.

I understand

Sparklefizz Thu 09-May-19 13:33:06

Thank you.

Thanks to all who have posted on here. I hope it isn't M.E as on some days I have felt fairly normal.

The glands in my neck are not sore or swollen so I am hoping whatever it is is on the way out.

It sounds like you are slowly getting better Rambling as you are having some good days. Some nasty viruses wipe us out for a while. Perhaps a course of vitamins would help you get on top things.
