I woke in the early hours with a raging sore throat.
I cannot be poorly, I HAVE to work next week.
Any remedies please?
I’ve got homemade soup with chicken stock.

Salt water gargles.
Honey and lemon in hot water.
Chicken stock soup - excellent, drink it all.

Rest as much as you can over the weekend - helps your body to heal.

Shine a torch down your throat to find out if your tonsils are inflamed or pussy (spelling??). If they are then it MAY be a case for antibiotics.

I find tea tree oil diluted (2 or 3 drops in a cup full of water) in warm water good.

Have a gargle with it, but don't swallow any.

We must be mixing with the same people Missfoodlove! I too, have a bad throat today, and feel as if my nose may soon explode!?. I suck on strepsils, alternate between ibuprofen and paracetamol. Chances are it’s just a virus. My children and grandchildren have all had them. All the best?

I began similar symptoms - sore throat, headache, runny nose - last Saturday (i.e. 8 days ago). Tried home remedies and otc things but eventually rang local surgery from my bed on Wed; by then I had developed a racking cough. On-call Dr phoned back, went through my symptoms, then told me it was either flu or a cold with flu-like symptoms and that there is a lot of it about. Yes, I did have a flu jab.

She checked that I do not live alone (I don't) and advised Day Nurse and Night Nurse. I am on the second pack, still unwell and finding everything an effort, including showering and dressing. The GP told me it would take 'quite a long time' to get back to normal, reminding me that I am 70. In fact, I was wondering about starting a thread asking for advice on how to recover from flu.

I wrote one Christmas card yesterday, then had to have a lie-down and a nap.

Sorry, Missfoodlove, this is not what you wanted to hear. I hope you have more stamina and resilience than I have, and a different bug. Get well soon.

Gargle with TCP diluted in water.

Also, take paracetamol for the pain. It's just like any other pain but somehow people don't seem to treat"throatache" with painkillers! I'm all for symptomatic relief when life has to go on.

Hope you feel better soon.

Wildswan16/GrannyKnot 100% accurate.
Hope you feel better soon too.

Missfoodlove sorry to hear you are feeling poorly (and all the others on here too).

My mother always used to give me Sandersons Throat Specific and I do have a bottle here. Having said that it almost feels as if you are taking paint stripper!! However, it does work for me.

Hope you feel better soon.

My lovely old GP always recommended gargling with soluble aspirin for a sore throat. Very soothing.

Salt gargle
Honey and lemon
Berocca
Chicken soup

My default menu. Worked for me this week?

Rinse with TCP.

Suck Tyrozet tablets which numbs the throat.
Can be bought over the counter from pharmacy.

Drink lemon. honey and grated ginger.

Cherrytree59 Sun 15-Dec-19 17:10:02

Rinse? Gargle

Hetty58 Sun 15-Dec-19 17:15:28

I'd take extra Vitamin C (it works as an anti-inflammatory), extra fluids and rest whenever possible, early nights etc. A little honey, with cinnamon and lemon, really does help.

Hetty58 Sun 15-Dec-19 17:18:34

Bronchostop tablets, for coughs, help with sore throats too.

TrendyNannie6 Sun 15-Dec-19 17:21:44

Gargle with tcp

Missfoodlove Sun 15-Dec-19 18:32:23

Thank you all?
I am now just a snot factory?.
Sore throat under control.
I have taken Vit C and zinc lozenges, echinacea pills and loads of homemade soup.
A warning to anyone taking night nurse Lem sip etc, these products contain ingredients that dry up the mucus, this can make sore throats worse and cause kidney problems.
Lavenderzen, I have tried Sandersons in the past, it’s not for the faint hearted!!
Hot toddy in a few minutes then bed.
??

Pineapple juice or fresh pineapple. I was told this by a friend who is a singing teacher. (Not mine, I am absolutely tone dumb). I'm not sure if pina coladas work !

Cabbie21 Sun 15-Dec-19 22:42:25

Sanderson’s Throat Specific is horrible but it works!
