Very swollen face following abscess draining .

Those on the Good Morning thread will be familiar with the ongoing story of my front tooth . Just looking for some advice /reassurance really and wonder how much more can be done to save my tooth .

Condensed version . Front tooth sensitive to hot and cold but no outward sign of decay . Dentist diagnosed decay in root canal and I had root canal procedure done over 2 weeks . A few days after the tooth was sealed the pain was excruciating and the dentist reopened the tooth and packed it with sedative . Settled down again and tooth again resealed. Moving on 2 weeks again in excruciating pain and face hugely swollen . Dentist opened the gum line and drained . Relief was short lasting only a day or two and the last few days have been agony . Face still swollen with swelling now spread to eye, sinus and nose . Have now had 3 full courses of 2 different antibiotics and seems to be getting worse instead of better . Been using ice packs on my face but the heat radiating from the swelling is quite scary .

Any advice at all would be most welcome .

Have to say I would have the tooth out! Do hope you feel better soon.

Been there, eventually had tooth out. Similar on lower teeth, had extractions after long time on antibiotics. Sorry to be so negative.

I think you probably need to see someone about it, gilly, and I'm sure that's the very last thing you feel like doing.

The fact that it's hot suggests there is still infection, and the swelling spreading sounds like it needs sorting.

Jane10 Sun 22-Dec-19 13:53:22

Probably needs sorting pdq too. What a shame though. As if you didn’t have enough on your plate and at this time too.

I had to have my front tooth removed, and it was not nearly as painful as yours has been.
Not the best time of year, and on top of all your other problems too. See your dentist ASAP.
Great sympathy for you.

SueDonim Sun 22-Dec-19 14:08:14

That sounds very painful, Gillybob. sad I think it needs looking at again sooner rather than later. You don’t want infection spreading even further. flowers

BlueBelle Sun 22-Dec-19 14:08:25

Sorry it’s a front tooth but really sounds like it needs to go
Tooth pain and tooth work is hideous but I find extraction less painful than root canal

janeainsworth Sun 22-Dec-19 14:19:43

Gilly go to A&E, now, and don’t take no for an answer.
A dental infection involving the eye can be dangerous.
You need to see a MaxFac bod ASAP.

EllanVannin Sun 22-Dec-19 14:26:42

I'd go to A&E asap Gillybob. Have the damn thing out soon. What does it matter that it's a front tooth you can have one on a plate or something.
It's dangerous when the poison travels.

MissAdventure Sun 22-Dec-19 14:29:44

I would second the idea of getting urgent care, but I didn't want to be the one to say it.

PamelaJ1 Sun 22-Dec-19 14:37:41

My sister has recently been putting up with a painful problem.
She had an emergency op a couple of nights ago. A huge infection.
Don’t want to scaremonger but better to be safe than sorry?

Elegran Sun 22-Dec-19 14:40:28

Do it now, Gilly - phone for emergency advice first if you like, but I am sure they will tell you to go to A&E. This sounds like an infection that flares repeatedly a few days after it is sealed up each time. It is NOT draining - it is building up pressure and must be investigated and fixed straightaway.

If you leave it, it could become blood poisoning, which can be fatal! The emergency departments will be overworked and understaffed in a few days, with the Christmas alcohol poisonings and stupid accidents and so on. Going now gets it seen and treated in relative peace and quiet.

Baggs Sun 22-Dec-19 14:41:45

gillybob, do what janea says NOW! All the best.

Doodle Sun 22-Dec-19 14:59:20

gillybob A&E for certain and now. Not worth taking any chances.

Charleygirl5 Sun 22-Dec-19 15:04:54

gillybob please listen to janeainsworth, she knows what she is talking about.

Expect to be admitted because it sounds to me as though you need IV antibiotics pdq.

lavenderzen Sun 22-Dec-19 15:06:05

Gilly please go to A&E, it sounds badly infected and needs attention, don't leave it any longer. I would also seriously think about having it out. Sending ((hugs))

GrannyGravy13 Sun 22-Dec-19 15:26:04

gillybob please ring an emergency dentist or go to A & E, your dear husband needs you well (as do we)

Susan56 Sun 22-Dec-19 15:28:53

Gilly,I’m another one who thinks you need to go to A and E asap.x

cornergran Sun 22-Dec-19 15:30:16

Just agreeing with others gilly, please don’t leave this. Urgent treatment is needed now.

kittylester Sun 22-Dec-19 15:33:40

Gilly, janea, knows - hope you've gone to A&E by now!

Keep us posted!!

Grammaretto Sun 22-Dec-19 16:14:23

Yes Gilly You know what to do. Though I do recommend A&E first thing in the morning before all the accidents (and drunks) arrive.

I have an, almost, front tooth hanging on a thread which I should have out but it's not causing pain yet so i am keeping it, wobbling until January. Then I will have to get a plate fitted. I've been putting it off as I don't fancy a gap or dentures.

welbeck Sun 22-Dec-19 16:25:04

please go at once, get mini-cab or someone who can drive you to emergency dept, right now.
do not delay.
this is beyond a dental problem. it could become really dangerous. it needs to be assessed and treated now.
please go.
this kind of thing can develop very quickly. do not delay.
good luck. let us know how you are.

Hetty58 Sun 22-Dec-19 16:33:20

gillybob, please let us now how you get on (asap)!

Kalu Sun 22-Dec-19 16:40:18

Please listen to janea/. This is far too serious to hang about any longer and needs attention now gilly

I know you have more than enough on your plate but you must look after yourself too.
