Just been refused canesten at Sainsbury's !

I bought Canesten at a pharmacy when around 61 and wasn't questioned. I bought it again some months later.
The following year I developed a prolapse and was then told I had vaginal atrophy. The reason why they are not supposed to sell Canesten to over 60s is because your symptoms are less likely to be thrush and more likely to be atrophy which needs a different treatment.

Don't worry too much about what age you looked to the girl at the counter, remember, everyone over 30 looks the same to younguns!

Oh this is so strange I bought a tube last week at Sainsbury’s pharmacy I’m 62 the pharmacist just handed it over, and I paid, certainly didn’t ask me my age, I’ve never heard of this before it’s a new one on me

It’s been happening for some years but some pharmacy assistants seem to be much hotter on this than others. The assistant in Boots seems to find questions for everyone but the assistant in Superdrug never questions at all.

To be fair, the product is for ages 16-60 so she did the right thing, frustrating though it is

I have been refused eye drops chloramphenicol and a cystitis tablet can’t remember which one at Boots but went across the street to Superdrug and was served both times So I never go for any drugs to Boots

I think they are trying to cut down on people using it on unconfirmed thrush as other things are often mistaken for it which delays treatment.

My pharmacy has a flow chart now that you're supposed to go threw before they "allow" you to buy it.

Yes, we all like to think we look a few years younger than we really are. Such a shock when it’s brought home to us we don’t!

Well I went to buy some suppositories (for occasional use) and was asked what I wanted them for! Oh it was SO tempting. . .

My husband was ill for nearly two weeks and ate ok but barely moved. Normally he fast-walks several miles a day and is very active. He had been feeling uncomfortable for a couple of days and finally asked me to pick up a laxative at Sainsbury’s pharmacy when I went shopping.

Well, they wouldn’t sell me one till he had “increased the fibre in his diet for a few days”. Given that we are mainly whole-food vegetarians, short of eating just bran, I was at a loss and told her so. She said she couldn’t sell them to me and pointed me to a nearby shelf where I could “help myself”.

On the shelf there were six or more varieties so I took three to the pharmacy to ask about them and she said “oh, they’re all the same, it’s up to you”.
They weren’t of course. Felt very annoyed.
We have only once had laxatives in the home in 40+ years and that was after he had an operation and took codene.

Where has common sense gone I wonder?

Boots won't sell it if you are over 60, nor would our local pharmacist !

Sorry posted too soon, as someone else mentioned, there are other issues that can mimic Thrush, one being Vaginal Atrophy, which requires different treatment. Having said that you can get VA much younger than 60 so could still be self medicating with the wrong product !

Yes, I was told today at Boots that Canestan is only to be used by those between 16-60 years old. When I said my husband is a retired GP & had approved my having it, they let me buy some. My husband suggest that if you know a pharmacist (a member of your family or a friend), you could discuss with them these standardised instructions, as they do not always apply to everyone's symptoms or condition. There must be a way around this without having to visit your GP on each occasion.

It's not nice getting older and knowing you look it. We are often given pensioners prices in cinema theatre etc without being asked.
No more " I can't believe you're that age. You look much younger!"
