I am 66 (will be 67) in September 2020. I lost my husband 2008 after 35 years of marriage and I worked full time up to Friday of last week (see below content of my resignation letter). I had been off sick that week.

I am seeing Docs tomorrow morning for advice as I feel I cannot work my months notice as just have no more energy and pain in body. The week I took off sick I was suffering from what I can only describe as very bad panic attacks I.e nausea, sweating, headaches, pain in joints and muscles & feeling very low in that I feel I am losing control physically.

I believe that I will improve both mentally & physically once I adapt to getting used to the time being my own to do with what I wish albeit financially I will be worse off but much better off health wise. I have worked all my life so this was a big decision for me and I have been thinking of taking this step for some time now since I was diagnosed with heart disease.

Letter of Resignation -
“Due to circumstance beyond my control It is with regret that as from Friday 24th January 2020 I give notice of my resignation. I can no longer continue working full time and have felt for sometime that my body tires very easily, the result of which has caused me ill-health and anxiety alongside the fact that I now have heart disease and an ongoing gum condition which leaves me in considerable pain.

Please note also

1. Air quality / air conditioning within office I feel has been detrimental to my health.
2. Office facilities I.e chair / computer positioning detrimental to my health
3. Noise factor / over-crowding within office can have a detrimental affect on productivity of work thus causing more stress although I hasten to add that I understand the ...... do have problems with funding and spacing.
4. I am of retirement age.

I would like to add that I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent with the other employees that I interact with on a daily basis, they have been an absolute pleasure to work with”

Good decision, but did you raise these issues earlier in your job? Did management fail to make reasonable adjustments?

Well done! It sounds like you've made the right decision.

DH was worried before he retired that we wouldn't have enough money, even though we'd been living on a much reduced income (our choice) for years. In fact we're better off without his travel expenses, so you might well find that your finances aren't as pinched as you fear.

You've worked hard and deserve some time to do what you feel like doing when you feel like doing it. Enjoy it!

Well done Anne107. Onwards and upwards! After spending a year in a post I was forced into and hated and suffering continuing ill health I too decided to retire. Like you my workmates made it worthwhile for that one year but after I retired my health improved dramatically. Financially I was not as badly off as I thought I would be as I had considerable work expenses. To be fair I now have unexpected other commitments but it was the best decision I have ever made. Good luck and future health and happiness to you.

Well done Anne.I retired early a couple of years ago due to health reasons and my health has improved tremendously.I am sure it will be the same for you. From a financial point of view,I have found I don’t spend as much money now I am not working.
I wish you all the best for a long, healthy and happy retirement???

A fabulous letter Anne107.
I hope you feel better soon and enjoy your retirement.
Just out of interest did you think about going part time ?.

I wish my 'little' sister could do this. She has sooo many health issues and i worry about her all the time. But financially she can't do it, she has another 7 years to go. sad Good luck to the OP hope it all works out for you.

I think it would have been sufficient to tender your resignation and stating health issues as the reason.
Writing a list of what you thought was causing the problems is possibly a step too far.

Urmstongran Tue 28-Jan-20 09:59:47

I’m with you on that harrigran.

Wishing you a long and happy retirement though Anne107!

Might help the remaining staff? (those who are afraid to speak up)

Gingergirl Tue 28-Jan-20 12:58:08

You have more than done your bit. No need to justify your retirement. Enjoy!
