Hi All, I hope you are well. I developed Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) after a singles outbreak. I have tried so many things with not much relief. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to recover because I don't know what to do. Thanks!

I also developed postherpetic neuralgia after shingles on my face and head. The pain was awful, so I really sympathise. Initially I bought various lotions designed for numbing skin. Yes - I tried both haemorrhoid cream and vagina cream on my face, ear and head. They helped, but I couldn’t deal with the pain in my scalp. My doctor prescribed amitriptyline which was a godsend. I very gradually weaned myself off it after 5 months. I hope you find a solution. Your GP should be able to help.

My husband had it after shingles, his was on his shoulder. He took codeine tablets and Paracetamol, for pain, and he was also prescribed Gabapentin and lidocaine patches. These were the only thing that worked. He weaned himself off the Gabapentin after about 4 months. You need this particular type of medication to work on nerve pain. He couldn't cope on Amitryptiline , all it did was make him excessively sleepy but the Gabapentin was brilliant .

Hi
Sorry to hear you’re still in so much pain ? After my shingles I got the Capsaicin cream. Don’t know if you’ve tried this but it was the one thing that worked for me. Stings like mad when you first put it on but for me it gradually took the pain away - hope you find something that helps !
