Hi, due to have a tongue polyp removed on thurday, scared stiff, not brave when it comes to needles. Has anyone had this done, but it as bad as I'm imagining?

Has anyone had a tongue polyp removed? Is it as bad as I am imagining? I am very anxious as I have a needle phobia.

Missfoodlove Tue 11-Feb-20 12:09:29

Buy Emla cream from a good pharmacy and apply 1hr before treatment. You will not feel the needle at all. I have used it before having a cannula in my hand. I didn’t feel a thing.

Jane10 Tue 11-Feb-20 12:18:56

No I've never had this but wanted to wish you well with it. I'm sure it won't be as bad as you fear though. Best wishes.

Hetty58 Tue 11-Feb-20 12:19:48

Oh dear, I think Emla is for skin - not inside mouths! Oragel is OK though. I'd take painkillers too, about an hour before as 'insurance' just in case it gets sore. I bet it's nowhere near as bad as you think!

Missfoodlove Tue 11-Feb-20 12:23:29

Hetty58, I was assuming it would be a general anaesthetic. ?

gillybob Tue 11-Feb-20 13:09:08

I had a tongue biopsy a few years ago Haydnpat and remember they sprayed my tongue with a local anaesthetic spray before they started . I am not going to pretend the injections were pleasant because they weren’t but they really weren’t anywhere near as bad as I feared they would be. The wound itself healed really fast too . Good luck .

Thank you ladies, been told it's a local anaesthetic. Already feeling sick with nerves. I dont want to make a fool of myself. Such a wuss!

nanaK54 Tue 11-Feb-20 14:57:22

Not 'a wuss' at all, hope all goes well flowers

Marilla Tue 11-Feb-20 15:00:15

Don’t worry about looking foolish and you are certainly not a wooze! I am sure the medical staff will understand your worries about the procedure and will put you at your ease.
Good luck.

curvygran950 Tue 11-Feb-20 15:19:04

You are definitely not being a wuss in the least , I can’t imagine anyone not feeling nervous !
Any chance of a Valium (or2) from your GP to take before you go ? Might be worth asking .......
best of luck flowers

MaggieTulliver Tue 11-Feb-20 16:13:35

Why are you scared? Obviously it’s not going to hurt and you know it’s benign so you don’t have to worry about them finding anything sinister. My 89 year old mum has injections into her eyes for wet AMD but takes it all in her stride. What is it about needles that terrifies you so much?

Kittye Tue 11-Feb-20 17:00:52

MaggieTulliver hardly helpful !
Haydnpat I’m not scared of needles but I’d be feeling much the same as you. Hope all goes well, as I’m sure it will. ❤️

Marilla Tue 11-Feb-20 17:25:10

A little insensitive MaggieTulliver. Just because someone else has a different condition and is not afraid of needles doesn’t help our friend here.

Tangerine Tue 11-Feb-20 17:28:20

You will not be the first person to be visibly upset at the hospital.

A friend of mine had this done and said it wasn't too painful and the result was nothing worrying either.

All the best.

SirChenjin Tue 11-Feb-20 17:32:45

Really helpful * MaggieTulliver*, well done. FWIW my almost 90 year old MiL has injections for the same condition and she gets quite upset by them and very anxious about them. Does that make her less of a woman, perhaps?

OP - I can well understand how nervous you must be feeling. Could you phone the hospital and see if they could offer any sedation? Failing that, your GP should be able to prescribe a few diazepam to take the edge off your nerves. Good luck flowers

GrandmaJan Tue 11-Feb-20 17:34:37

Hetty is correct. Please don’t put Emla cream in your mouth. Good luck Haydnpat* I’m sure you will be fine. Take care

Nannylovesshopping Tue 11-Feb-20 17:34:57

Good luck Haydnpat I find stuff that I’m dreading, generally is not as bad as I’ve imagined, we are all anxious about something new, well most of us that is, sending brave vibes to you?

BlueBelle Tue 11-Feb-20 17:35:38

maggietulliver plain nasty what’s the matter with you
My Dad has the same injections into his eye as your mum but it doesn’t mean I don’t shake at the thought of going to the dentist Totally unnecessary and a little compassion goes a long way or don’t post at all if you don’t have any

I d be bricking it too but I m sure it won’t be as bad as you are thinking Good luck

BlueBelle Tue 11-Feb-20 17:39:01

sirchenjin my doctor wouldn’t prescribe any one off diazepam when I asked I only wanted a couple before some complex dental treatment but he point blank refused saying they don’t do that any more Lucking I had a lovely friend who gave me a couple ?

SirChenjin Tue 11-Feb-20 17:46:40

Oh that’s a shame Bluebelle. My GP prescribes a couple for me if I’m having dental work done - like you I have a dental phobia and they’re really helpful for that.

SueDonim Tue 11-Feb-20 17:48:55

I’m not sure being scared has much to do with it, Maggietulliver. I'm ok with needles, I’ve had plenty in my time, but I needed a particular injection for dental work recently and it bloody well hurt! A lot! Dentist was most apologetic. Bravery or otherwise was irrelevant.

OP, I hope it isn’t as bad as you fear. flowers

My mother had something removed from under her tongue many years ago the removal was fine but her tongue was very sore afterwards and it reduced the food she could eat - jelly and ice cream were helpful to her - maybe you could make sure you had some ready for your return home..

Jane10 Tue 11-Feb-20 18:21:03

Good idea Welshwife.
When I had my knee replacement under sedation the anaesthetist gave me what he called an 'intravenous gin and tonic'. It was lovely! Very relaxing.

curvygran950 Tue 11-Feb-20 18:29:52

Goodness Jane10
Were you actually awake all through ? You are a very brave lady !
