Strange symptoms

I feel as though my stomach (not my gut) is full of wind and I desperately want to burp - but can't. I've had it about a week and its so painful its stopping me sleeping.
I had a telephone conversation with my GP and he suggested acid reflux and recommended gaviscon - but even though I explained there is no acid and no heartburn he said try it for a week and report back. I feel 'fobbed off' but concede he has many much more serious problems to deal with that a bit of indigestion.
I really really need to sleep.

Although he said avoid fizzy drinks - I feel like drinking a glass of fizzy pop quickly - and hopefully provoke the much needed burp.
Would that be a really bad idea?

I find these really effective:

try probiotics.......a lot of people are experiencing constipations during the covid 19. i wouldnt drink fizzy drinks ,this makes it worse...

I'd go for the burp option as well as taking gaviscon.

Too much acid can give rise to some strange symptoms.

Windeze are excellent as are Buscopan both available OTC.
I have had a similar problem in the past but experienced pain, the above worked quickly.

I sometimes get something that sounds very similar to what you describe, ExD, though mine doesn't usually last that long - one very bad day (or more commonly, night rather than day, as it often starts late afternoon), then increasingly weak 'aftershocks' for a few days after that.

My stomach (and I do mean stomach, rather than abdomen) feels bloated and painful, and anything that helps me to burp relieves it temporarily, though it doesn't make it go away. Only time does that.

In fact, I have found that precisely because they help me to burp, fizzy drinks do help a bit, though in my case lemonade-type drinks make it worse, but fizzy water helps.

Over time, I have learnt a few other tricks -when the discomfort begins, I stay as upright as I can, and even jog on the spot to try to release any gas that is trapped in my stomach. It can help, and very occasionally even staves off the attack.l

Anything that I eat while suffering from this makes the discomfort more severe. The worst bout I ever had was while away on a break, and though I as already in discomfort, I felt I had to eat out inrestaurant with OH. Huge mistake, resulting in an awful night!

I'd second trying Windeze or peppermint oil, but only after you have tried your GP's recommendation of a week's Gaviscon.

MamaCaz Thu 11-Jun-20 13:26:37

Just to add, since this began nearly 30 years ago, I have tried all manner of indigestion remedies and tablets for releasing trapped wind, but none have given even the slightest bit of relief from the pain.
Actually, that's not quite true - Andrew's liver salts helped slightly - that will be the fizziness, I guess!

lemsip Thu 11-Jun-20 13:29:42

drink more water. I also second the peppermint oil capsules also buscopan. I always think of plumbing, when you have to flush things through. So water is my remedy. not to much at once of course but frequently throughout the day

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jun-20 13:32:24

I get very similar problems if I overeat, particularly cheese or bread, and also if I don't take omeprazole.

It doesn't feel acid-like; it's really painful!

lemsip Thu 11-Jun-20 13:32:47

also if you're relatively fit lay on the floor on your tummy and very gently roll side to side,it will shift any wind!

Drink more water and a strong glass of andrews may help you to burp and it’s good for constipation. Here’s hoping you get to the root of things soon have you had a gall bladder scan who knows perhaps it’s the gallbladder.

I took a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in warm water last night because I had a pain which could have been wind (it happens but rarely).

It seemed to work, if you have any and can't get out to buy anything else.

EllanVannin Thu 11-Jun-20 14:25:27

I thankfully don't suffer any stomach pain at all, never have, or indigestion-----all my wind congregates in the lower part and comes out of the " back door ". Not lady-like I know, but the best way to get rid of it.

EllanVannin Thu 11-Jun-20 14:29:02

Bicarb is the best thing as mum often had that, Callistemon.

Callistemon Thu 11-Jun-20 14:35:17

You may need a teaspoon of sugar ready because bicarbonate tastes foul.

A lot of stomach problems can be stress related. You have mentioned your home situation with your husband. Perhaps you could try to to be a little less stressed, if that's possible.
The gut is not referred to as the second brain for nothing.

Mamissimo Thu 11-Jun-20 15:11:58

A lot of you are describing symptoms that could be gallstones? I am waiting to have my gall bladder removed and attacks start With a feeling like trapped wind and it’s far more uncomfortable sitting down. Attacks are usually after eating - particularly a meal with a fairly high fat and dairy content like a restaurant meal - and last between two and four hours. It’s very unpleasant.

It took me a while to get a diagnosis - I was given antacids, buscopan and omneprozole and it was only when someone noticed that my liver function was affected that the penny dropped with my GP.

Might be worth suggesting it?

Whingingmom Thu 11-Jun-20 15:33:46

I had similar symptoms and a horrible cough. No indigestion or heartburn. My GP suggested it might be “silent “ reflux - you don’t get any of the typical symptoms of heartburn etc. I admit I was rather dismissive, but Omeprazole once Daily 30 mins before breakfast is helping. Google silent reflux or silent GERD, lots of symptoms you wouldn’t expect.

EllanVannin Thu 11-Jun-20 16:16:17

Over eating or eating late can cause stomach problems. Plus as you get older the digestive system doesn't work as efficiently as it did because everything slows down.

BlueBelle Thu 11-Jun-20 16:17:46

Sounds very like trapped wind which can be very painful boiled water (cooled) can help Acid reflux doesn’t always cause heartburn It can cause really what seem like unrelated symptoms a rough throat, a cough (especially early morning) a croaky voice
I don’t think your doctor has fobbed you off it seems like the most likely first appointment diagnosis obviously if it doesn’t stop with the meds he will investigate more

Fennel Thu 11-Jun-20 16:27:15

I get that too if don't take lansoprazole. I've been diagnosed wih gastritis, and a small ulcer which comes and goes.
For getting rid of gas try pulling your stomach musles in and out as fast as you can to move things down.
Also a little orange juice in hot water slowly helps.

downtoearth Thu 11-Jun-20 16:37:31

I always pay a visit to Tesco, it never fails.

My trapped wind always wants to escape as soon as I enter the buliding.

Fortunately as more people are wearing masks, I adopt the deflating balloon technique and give a slow hiss all the way round.

If it feels loud and proud then I adopt the 'Mince' , buttocks clenched along with jaw until I reach the sactuary of my car, and try not to in there too long.

That used to happen to me as soon as I reached the second aisle in Quik Save! Doesn't seem to happen now that Quik Save is no more!

OP it does sound like acid reflux to me. I get it if I drink alcohol on an empty stomach - its absolutely agonizing. It can also cause a persistent cough.

I use Ranitidine prescribed by my GP but it is also available in OTC preparations. Buscopan is good too.

Fennel Thu 11-Jun-20 19:39:49

Best way out!
