I think Gransnet is seriously damaging my emotional health. I just read through all the posts and they are so depressing!!! For goodness sake lighten up.

MawB Thu 18-Jun-20 10:30:55

Good point Teetime! I must admit I am spending less time here because I either end up seething (about something) , depressed at the grumpy brigade or in tears! Mind you, I do spend too much time on my iPad anyway, but let’s at least try to find reasons to be cheerful! smile

merlotgran Thu 18-Jun-20 10:34:17

I wouldn't say it's affecting my mental health but all I can find to post about at the moment is what we're having for dinner! grin

Teetime Thu 18-Jun-20 11:02:28

Yes me too nothing much happening in our lives to entertain anyone else but I just think if we are only concentrating on the negative on here there isn't much point to it. I have been on Granset a long times and have loved the laughs, the information and the opportunity to help someone else with a query or some support. At the moment all that seems to be missing. Yes we are living through a terrible crisis on the health and the economic front but does being permanently argumentative and negative help that at all? Of course not I will try and think up a more lighthearted thread. Revolting Breakfasts went well didn't it? Put my thinking cap on.

Calendargirl Thu 18-Jun-20 11:11:30

Totally agree Teetime.

Certain posts I only have to look who is writing on them and I don’t bother to read any further, as dissent and arguments seem to be the main aim.

When I joined GN, not too long ago, it seemed very different.

Sad.

Toadinthehole Thu 18-Jun-20 11:22:51

I think the conversations are often good ones to have, and interesting...it’s just sometimes I feel a little anxious posting in case of a backlash. I definitely feel a sense of intolerance to other people’s views.

OceanMama Thu 18-Jun-20 11:23:15

Maybe the lower tone reflects the stress people have been under lately with lock down?

Rowantree Thu 18-Jun-20 11:51:27

Teetime, I found your OP harsh and judgemental. If you object to people offloading, feeling sad, grumpy or otherwise negative, try another thread. Telling people to 'lighten up' is patronising and unkind.

TrendyNannie6 Thu 18-Jun-20 11:57:19

I think there will always be some people that struggle more than others, and I think it’s a real shame there are people that darent post due to the fact they fear a backlash from certain individuals. That’s really sad, kindness costs nothing

Teetime Thu 18-Jun-20 11:58:22

I rest my case Rowantree.

MawB Thu 18-Jun-20 11:58:55

Rowantee why should Teetime not express her feelings?
Surely there is room for all shades and moods but I totally agree that the majority of threads recently have been characterised by anger, bitterness and fury ( AIBU No going back to school, I’m furious as an example) or Anger at rule breakers ) -there is only so much fury a person can take without several cafecafecafe

Anniebach Thu 18-Jun-20 12:16:09

Rowantree. Offloading

Calling posters ‘nasty , embittered old crones ‘ is offloading ?

Maw is so right,

kittylester Thu 18-Jun-20 12:26:24

I completely agree with Teetime!

Lucca Thu 18-Jun-20 12:28:49

We keep getting threads like this and I’ve said before I like the fact that there is variety. Some of the news or political threads become heated because people feel, passionate about issues, surely that’s good ?
I don’t read any threads about crafting because I am useless at that sort of thing but I don’t say that we shouldn’t have them !

Lucca Thu 18-Jun-20 12:29:49

Those suffering from clinical depression may take exception by the way to the title of the thread, just saying.

Ilovecheese Thu 18-Jun-20 12:32:22

But there are loads of threads that are not depressing or contentious:
Our Sewing Forum
Soops Kitchen
The argy Bargy
How will we cope without the Achers
Coronation street
Etc.
All the many games.
Surely it is possible to just avoid the ones you don't like.

merlotgran Thu 18-Jun-20 13:13:16

Surely it is possible to just avoid the ones you don't like.

Apart from The Archers, all of the above. grin

Nothing wrong with them - just not my cup of tea.

Now.....What are we going to have for dinner? grin

MawB Thu 18-Jun-20 13:14:39

Ilovecheese
I don’t sew
Don’t watch Coronation Street - or any soaps.
Have given up on the Archers
(There is more to life than soaps)

Can’t stand the endless games threads -which go round and round repeating themselves ad nauseam

So much for friendly, lively discussion?

Thank goodness for Soops kitchen and the Argy

"I just read through all the posts and they are so depressing"

There are plenty of lighthearted and fun threads on here so no need for anyone's emotional health to be damaged. Just look at what interests you and steer clear of those that you find upsetting. Reading all the posts must take up a lot of time so perhaps consider spending less time on GN and more on life outside of GN.

Teetime Thu 18-Jun-20 14:04:36

Lucca I too suffer and have suffered clinical depression for many years.

Harris27 Thu 18-Jun-20 14:08:40

I too haven’t spent as much time as usual on this site as I found if very deepressing. And I’m already that way furloughed with no friends and communication daily. Trying to keep up though.

Lucca Thu 18-Jun-20 14:26:22

I apologise in that case. I was just saying I thought some posters might take issue.

Rowantree Thu 18-Jun-20 16:03:09

I hadn't seen any posts about embittered old crones. I'm a crone myself, and not ashamed of being one! Not keen on being told to 'lighten up' out of the blue and I don't think those who want to post something sad or depressing or who need some support, should feel put off from doing that.

AGAA4 Thu 18-Jun-20 16:15:53

Be good to have a balance. Some heavy as in political and some lighter ones and of course always those posters who need help.

Maybe the balance is wrong just now in these strange times.

Riverwalk Thu 18-Jun-20 16:24:27

Teetime I'm surprised at your little outburst!

There are lots of different topics to post on - and as is always said, why not start some lighthearted threads of your own?

GN isn't a Mental Health forum - none of us here is responsible for anyone's emotional health.
