Cellulitis

Hi, I'm so sorry to hear of this. A young relative had this as a tot and was hospitalised.
I can't remember much of it as I was spared most of the details I was going through a bad period of health and it was decided it was best not to worry me.
All I remember was, it was in her legs and around one eye, it was quite bad, she was in hospital for a couple of days and her mother stayed with her. 5 years on and she is completely fine and doesn't even remember it. I hope you're well soon, my inbox is open if you need to chat. X

I think i am trying to second guess the doctor thinking I might need a second antibiotic. it has calmed a little now after i took some ibuprofen. Enough perhaps to try to sleep. It's already 6am.Mum

Also it's the way the consultations and appointments are only by telephone. Best that we can have under the circumstances but if Dr can't see a rash, can't feel it, it all feels a bit make do.

Coolgran, I have had cellulitis in my legs twice, both times it started on holiday abroad. The latest infection I had last year meant my long awaited angiogram was postponed. The cardiac consultant was still wary, even after it has cleared up.

The worst thing about it was the itch and stinging feeling. I was given antibiotics, it did eventually clear up, but it took months for the marks on my legs to disappear. I also had a light dressing to protect the skin. If you have concerns, I think you should go back and see your GP for advice.
At one point, I couldn't even get my shoes on, so I can empathize with how you are feeling.

I first became aware of cellulitis when my late mother got it, I'd never heard of it before that, she was in hospital a while with the condition, not pleasant.

Marydoll. Glad to say I’m getting my shoes on. And fortunately I don’t have any itch but it feels like it’s burning. Better than it initially was but stopped improving.

Terribull awful for your mother. I had heard of it but hadn’t seen it. Not one of my friends has ever had it.

A few years ago I woke up with it, went to my GP who immediately sent me to hospital. It was diagnosed there and gave me antibiotics which did eventually cure it but the rash and itchiness were horrid.

I now have lymphoedema in both legs which to me is even worse and is incurable. Joy of joys.

My husband had it about 10 years ago. It developed from a bout of athletes foot. It started on his big toe and worked it's way up his calf. The doctor drew a line on my husbands leg and told him if the course of antibiotics he'd prescribed failed to work he would have to go into hospital for IV treatment.
It took 2 weeks to clear up though he does have a black spot under his toenail, as a reminder.
A couple of years later I had it in my right breast after a double biopsy. Thankfully it was cleared up quickly.

My BIL has had cellulitis several times in the last couple of years. He was bitten by some unidentified insect whilst in Spain on holiday.
His leg was so swollen and red it looked as if the skin would split, the last time he was treated at home with I/V drugs with two nurses staying with him.

I've had cellulitis in an arm twice and it took more than one week of antibiotics to get rid of it.

An older locum said that it can sit deep in the soft tissue and be quite stubborn so needs more than a week of antibiotics so I would go back and ask for at least two more weeks worth, Coolgran.

It can start with a very small infection from a cut or an insect bite which you may think has healed and it can recur if not tackled properly.

I had cellulitis in my leg last year, I was given a course of very high dose antibiotics for 10 days and then a lower dose for a week. My G.P linked it to the dermatitis I suffer with. It was very painful for the first week and remained uncomfortable for 3/4 weeks afterwards.

I developed cellulitis some years ago in my face and neck, followed by shingles. Because the shingles was near my eyes they gave me the anti viral drug and massive doses of antibiotics and something else (I think it was steroids) for the cellulitis. They were very keen on me going into hospital for treatment but I managed to convince them I would be better at home. I can honestly say I have never felt so awlful and for so,long. The shingles went gradually only to return a month later just as the cellulitis was improving. It was nearly a year before I felt really right. It is a very nasty thing to have
