Hallux rigidus pain

I have had a painful stiff toe for some years and just dismissed it as arthritis. It has steadily become worse although some days it isn't too bad. However, often I find it difficult to get my "sensible" Mary Jane Hotter shoes on without a lot of pain in my toe and some days find it quite difficult to walk. Having said that some days it isn't too bad. My GP some months ago suggested Ibuprofen which helps up to a certain point and I really should go back and see her. I have read on Mr Google about various treatments including fusion and wonder whether anyone else has experience of this.

Could be gout......extremely painful. Need to get GP to look at it and do some tests.

Try Rhus Tox & Ruta Cream by Helios rubbed into it. This has worked wonders on arthritis in my hands and feet. There are many people who have had drastic surgery like fusion on the Arthritis Group I belong to ..... it's not to be considered lightly.

Thank you for the very useful replies. Have ordered Rhus Tox and Ruta cream and will give this a go. I will also ring the GP.

I had this. A podiatrist made a special insole for me which supported my toe rigidly. After a while the joint stiffened up and pain went. Coincidentally it first happened after wearing Hotter shoes. Have not worn them since and no reoccurance.

I have had my big toe fused as it and the next toe fell to bits (internally) I still get nerve pain and cant wear nice shoes but at least I can walk everywhere.

I had both my big toes fused 11 years ago & have been pain free since. It was the best thing I ever did as it allowed me to walk with no discomfort whatsoever.I can wear a small heeled shoe if I want to dress up,flip flops if I want to dress down & trainers or walking shoes when I need to walk some distance.I try to walk 2 or 3 miles every day & at 74 think this is good that this operation has allowed me to do this.
