The virus invariably causes lasting damage anywhere in the body. When I had Asian flu it affected a kidney or kidneys and I developed Pyelitis at the time while working on a ward.
Years later I was diagnosed with CKD which I've always maintained was a legacy left behind by the 1957 pandemic.
Saying that, you can live for years with CKD providing you look after yourself and have an annual blood test to make sure that the condition is kept under control. Mine has been at stage 3 for a number of years now, may it remain so because stage 4 is dialysis time.
