New Zealand has held a referendum on Euthanasia

Such a complicated issue when it comes to legislation but in theory I’d be for it. I’m ignorant but which countries already allow it ? Holland ? Scandinavian countries ?

I’m not very up to date on it but isn’t it just Switzerland?

The NZ was overwhelmingly for the right to choose.

I'm also pro choice regarding this issue. It's very complicated as Lucca said and I think even the word 'Euthanasia' is very emotive. There would have to be stringent controls in place but it could and should be done.

Just heard the interview about it on Radio Four and it sounds good. I'd vote for it.

Funny, as I m not religious but somehow I can’t equate it being right to take something we had no choice in being given

I am very, very much in favour of having the right to choose when we feel our time should be up.
The only real arguments against it seem to be (A) religious ones - and no-one will have to go along that road if they do not wish to do so (B) ensuring proper and careful checks and regulations are in place - and that is imperative, but can be done.
I have no fear of being dead - to me it is the end - I have and have never had any sort of religious believes, or thoughts of heaven, valhalla, or anything else.
I do have a very (and increasingly as I get older) fear of the manner of my dying. Yes, I have a strong Advance Declaration in place, Yes, my children (all with similar believes), no my wishes - but still am scared.
Surely, I should be given the right to decide when I feel it is time to leave this life - and to be able to do so with dignity.
My chosen way is at home, having had time to say all my goodbyes, ensured my affairs are in good order - then having a Doctor give me a drink which will quickly send me to sleep and total sleep.
I would expect there to be a longish and very careful period between my first asking for this and for it being carried out, during which I would be checked to ensure it is MY decision totally, and I knew and understood what the decision meant.
New Zealand, without doubt, seems to be the world leader in so much these days.

Reminded me of the day I said to my Mum that I needed to speak to her about some Echinasia for her Problem, she looked shocked and asked me if I thought she was that ill that she needed to be ‘put down’.
Mind you, she also told me that she would never set foot in Harry Ramsdens chip shop, because of the way he swore when he was cooking on the telly! Took a while to explain that it was Gordon Ramsey, she remained unconvinced.

I would like to choose when and where I die rather than suffer a long and painful death.

I have always thought that we treat our pets with more respect than we do humans.
My OH has promised to do everything he can to put me out of my misery should I reach a stage at which he is aware I would want to be released.
I will happily do the same for him.

I'm very much in favour and would welcome a referendum here. We can end our pets' suffering and should be able to do the same when it comes to our own.

After Brexit I have no faith that the ones against the vote would ever accept the result.

Should be included in end of life care. It’s not the dying I am frightened of but the pain I may have to suffer.

I would vote for that. I had a conversation recently with my doctor about Do not resuscitate.

Seeing how The Liverpool Care Pathway the palliative care practice that intended to allow people with a terminal illness to die with dignity ended up with healthy older people being sent to the hereafter I think I will give it a miss.

Well intentional policies always manage to end up mismanaged. We would wind up with the rich being spared and the workers whose bodies are wrecked from a lifetime of toil and are of no further use, being sent to meet their maker.

Watching my mother and her mother have dreadful 8 or so years with dementia is something I don't want nor do I wish to inflict upon my family .

This is something I feel strongly about. A few years ago I had a friend who was dying from cancer, she lived in Oregon in the USA and when the disease got too bad she applied for voluntary euthanasia which is legal in that state. She had a wonderful death, surrounded by her friends. I had flown over and she was so brave and so sure she was doing the right thing. At about the same time one of my sisters friends had terminal stomach cancer (in the UK) and she died in a horrible way despite the wonderful McMillan nurses who tried to help her. I have no doubt that we should have euthanasia in this country and I would definitely vote for it.

I have always believed in euthanasia. It's the quality of life not quantity. Speaking from experience of nursing a much loved husband until his death. My husband had grade 4 malignant melanoma. Was diagnosed January 2001 died February 2004 4 days after his 47th birthday. He had secondary tumors 3 in his right lung, 1 in his chest and 2 in his brain by the optical nerve. He died in agony and couldn't breathe. I don't him to stop f
