Vitamin D3

Just wanted some of your feedback on taking Vitamin D3. There is an old thread from 2019 but thought I would start a new one.

I started taking Vitamin D3 (25ug) about six months ago as I heard they were good for your immune system. I was hoping it might give me some protection from Covid.

I have been taking the Vitabiotics brand which I bought at the supermarket.

I have to say that recently I have noticed that my mood has improved and I don't have so many aches and pains.

Just to give a bigger picture, I am 63 and am currently working full time but from home. I am ashamed to say that I do barely any exercise and need to lose weight. I am not on any medication.

I am not one for taking supplements as a rule and I sometimes forget to take them.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has had a good result from taking Vitamin D3 or is this all in my mind?

I've starting taking Vit D after blood tests showed I'm very deficient (normal range is 50 plus, mine is 20). I haven't felt any different yet but I only started on Monday! Glad you are feeling better now.

I understand that your body can't store Vit D. However, I would think taking it over time would show some benefit.

I take one 1,000 iU of vitamin D3 per day on the advice of my endocrinologist. I had hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcaemia and had surgery to remove 2 adenomas in 2019. I feel a lot better after my surgery and I’m sure the D3 must help with my wellbeing.

It might be worth seeking advice from your doctor. A doctor can prescribe vitamins in certain situations. Even if the doctor cannot prescribe vitamin D for you in your particular circumstances, you might like to consider asking your doctor about it, maybe in a telephone appointment in these troubled times, if you have access to a telephone, then if the doctor agrees, then at least you would know that you were taking them with the knowledge and agreement of your doctor and it would most likely be on your medical record too.

For example, the doctor might advise on how much to take and might even suggest other vitamins and minerals.

I hope this helps.

I have found these links.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/vitamin-d-for-vulnerable-groups/vitamin-d-and-clinically-extremely-vulnerable-cev-guidance

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/

There is a section in the second link with the heading.

What happens if I take too much vitamin D?

I have been prescribed Ad Cal D3 (its Sunday title) since 2009 when I fell downstairs and had a # dislocation of my ankle which needed surgery. I had osteopenia and having taken the drug for so long my levels are obviously back to normal. I have to take it for life.

There is controversy over Vitamin D. It’s accepted that everyone should take it in the winter because we don’t get enough sun on our bodies during the winter months to make it as we do in the summer.

However, the NHS advice is that we should supplement with 10mcg a day. But many doctors think this doesn’t provide optimum levels for health, as opposed to minimum levels to avoid deficiency.
I follow Dr John Campbell & he recommends 25mcg a day. On his videos he explains how those with optimum Vit D levels were a) less likely to contract Covid and b) if they did contract it and were hospitalised, had better outcomes.
He thinks the NHS should have promoted its use right at the beginning of the pandemic - they did, belatedly, provide it for people who were shielding I think.
Google Dr John Campbell vitamin D if you’re interested.
It’s also been suggested that low Vit D levels are associated with depression.

Incidentally I take supermarket own brand - probably cheaper than vitabiotics.

I have been taking this for about a year

B9exchange Thu 29-Apr-21 12:21:49

It seems to be recommended as we don't spend long enough outdoors in the sunshine to make our own.

Have been taking it since before CV19, but it was recommended for everyone last year as a boost to the immune system.

I noticed my nails don’t split since starting D3 , but not noticed any difference in my mood

Millie22 Thu 29-Apr-21 13:38:16

I would definitely keep on with vitamin d as it can really help your immune system deal with infection and viruses. I use a spray rather than the tablets.

Hi folks. I'm hoping for some advice...Got a horrible UTI at the beginning of February and had 3 courses of antibiotics, which finally shifted it. Got nasty effects from these ...thrush!!!Canestan X2 doesn't seem to have worked and I'm wondering if I've taken a reaction to medication with azoles...had to come off Omeprazole previously cos I got sore tongue and very sensitive on the roof of my mouth. Has this happened anyone?

It's not the Vitamin D which is helping your nails. However, if the body doesn't have enough Vit D, it can't absorb enough calcium, which can affect nails and bones. It's also why too much Vitamin D can cause you to absorb too much calcium, which can cause kidney stones and affect your heart and brain.

My friends doctor advised her to take Vit D as she was low but he didn’t prescribe them her daughter thought she was doing the right thing and bought her mum the highest Vit D she found Some months later my friend was recalled for a blood tests for something completely unrelated and a week later got an urgent phone call from the doctor telling her to come of the Vit D immediately as she was close to poisoning herself

Franbern Fri 30-Apr-21 08:18:39

Have been taken, on prescription, Adcal D3 tablets twice daily for a long time, also Alendronic Acid tab once a week. After a lifetime of splitting nails, despite every sort of special treatments, I now have nearly reasonable nails.

I was, originally just told to take the Adcal tabs once a day, but a stress fracture of the spine a couple of years ago, and I was told I must have Osteoporosis (although have never had any bone density test for that), so I was told to double my taking of those and also start the Aledronic tabs,.

I would NEVER take on a regular basis ANY medication, viteman or otherwise, without checking with my GP.

Do think that the message from Bluebelles post should be heard loudly and clearly. Even things that are a good for you can also kill you in excess.

I think it would be better if you started a separate post for your question.

You would get a better response

I just started taking Vit D3 between 500 in and sometimes a little more.
My levels are really low.
I started having symptoms of less than 4 hours of sleep and I was always an 8 hour a night guy. My shoulders started to feel like theybwere freezing up, then my other joints started having similar pains. My elbows especially if I kay on my arms wrong. Im tired all the time. Im definitely cranky all the time.
I finally got a test and my vit D was low. I tried taking it once 1000 iu a day and it seemed to make me very anxious and I felt jittery in my feet and dizzy or lightheaded. My body didn't tolerate it very well I dont suppose. Not sure why.
I ended up trying again and this time I'm taking a vit d 3 thats suppose to be highly absorbed. So far no dizziness or anything. I only take 500 in a day However. The bottle says to take 1000 but I dont know if I can handle that again yet.
Since I started on this I've noticed my muscles started hurting worse and the aches got worse instead of better. It is this common when you first start off with treatment? Does it hurt at first until your levels build back up. Just wondering if the pain getting worse upfront after starting is a normal thing. Also is it normal to only have 3 to 4 hours of sleep at a time ??? Its ridiculous. Im always tired too.
Not sure how long this D3 will take to work but im hoping soon. .y body is in rough shape right now. Im 38 and I feel 80. I. Serious. Id just like to hear everyone's experiences with it . What did yall go through right after you started treatment. Does it make every feel jittery and dizzy sort of kinda anxious all over ? If so what did you do about that.

PinkCosmos Thu 03-Jun-21 08:08:45

DaleC82 - I have been taking Vitamin D for about a year now and I have had no side effects. I have generally felt better - mood wise and aches and pains are less.

Do you think you could be suffering from anxiety or some kind of muscular illness rather than it being a side effect of the Vit D?

I take 1000 micrograms a day. I am not on any other medication and am generally in good health.

Liz46 Thu 03-Jun-21 08:16:45

I have been taking Vit D3 for several years as I read that it helps keep our lungs healthy. (I have fairly serious lung problems)

The government offered free D3 to people who were shielding and I accepted. It was the same strength that I have been taking.

FlexibleFriend Thu 03-Jun-21 14:51:00

I take vitamin D3 along with several other supplements on the advice of my specialist. I take 5000iu every day and can't say I feel better or worse tbh. I feel fine but what does that mean? I've certainly never felt jittery and I sleep well for at least 8 hours a night. I've been taking my vitamin cocktail for about 10 years now and with no adverse feelings I guess it's doing what was intended. No doubt I'll find out when we get back to regular appointments and testing.

Marydoll Thu 03-Jun-21 15:08:04

I have been taking a regular dose of Adcal 800IU for many years, precribed by my endinocronologist. However, I don't seem to be able to retain it.
Last week, 100,000 IU was posted to me, next day delivery, by my consultant to be taken immediately in a single dose, as my VitD and Calcium levels hadn't registered at all in a recent blood test.
That explains why I have been feeling so ill recently. Some of the symptoms of VitD and calcium deficiency, is muscle and joint pain and anxiety. That just about sums up how I was feeling!
Last year my levels came back at 14, so I have actually got worse, despite taking my meds! sad

However, I do believe it should be taken under supervision, as overdosing on it can be dangerous. Only a blood test can determine your levels.

growstuff Thu 03-Jun-21 15:16:45

That's over 10 times the recommended dose. Too much Vit D3 can lead to too much calcium in the blood, which can lead to kidney problems.

That sums up how I'm feeling too.

Perhaps I should try Vitamin D again, just the recommended dose. I found that taking it did seem to coincide with increased joint pain so I stopped taking it.
I've no idea what my levels are.
