My hair is falling out and blocked the vacuum cleaner

For the last couple of months I’ve noticed increasing amounts of hair falling out. My shower drain has to be cleared every time I wash my hair. Yesterday I noticed a lot of hair on the vacuum brush, so I unpicked it all, before finishing the upstairs. Today, I needed to vacuum the downstairs, but after a few mins realised I wasn’t picking up bits. I rechecked the roller and was shocked to see the roller was completely jammed with hair. Hubby had to take the vac apart to be able to remove the hair. I had noticed my hair feeling thinner, but now I’m terrified I will lose it all. I buy quality hair care. The only other thing I have is a few pounds too many, and my skin is exceptionally dry - everywhere- hands, feet, legs, tummy, face. Maybe my scalp is also dry and that’s why it’s falling out? Anyone else experienced this?

Yes! Exactly the same thing.
I've posted on every hair threas about this, so I'll be brief.
I had a blood test Jan 2020 for an unrelated thing.
Apparently my vitamin D levels were ridiculously low. I had prescription grade vitamin D for about a month and now take health span vitamin D every day.
My hair is now the best it's been for literally over 20 years.
It does not fall out now and is lovely and thick
Good luck, I hope that you get it sorted thanks

Oh this brought back memories of when my daughter lost all her hair at the age of 14. I wept as I unjammed my vacuum cleaner after cleaning her room.
Her dad had alopecia and when she first had it as a toddler I remember being told she would eventually lose all her hair, eyebrows, lashes, everything.
She is a remarkable human being-she never missed a day of school, went to college and university, married has two children and a good career.
Alopecia is a cruel disease but it isn't the end of the world.

I’ve been Having similar problems but not so extreme! Lots of hair caught on my brush and floating around the house.

My hair is a bit thinner and different texture. It used to be very thick and coarse but now thinned down to a reasonable level (as long as the moulting doesn’t continue) and rather finer. Not sure if this is an age thing, a lock down issue or from the time when I had the worst hot flush ever where even my hair roots felt as if they were burning. This was when I had my mystery infection and the GPs were refusing to see patients.

It could be a thyroid problem. I have lost my eyebrows and have very poor hair because I have diabetes and an underactive thyroid. Get yourself checked out.

Fanny, thank you for taking the time to reply. I failed to mention that I also had an unconnected blood test which showed I also have very low vitamin D, I’m on prescription strength 20,000 iu for three months. I’m so glad you have got your lovely hair back. Thank you again ?

Abbeygran Sat 01-May-21 14:20:36

Keepingquiet- I’m so very sorry you and your daughter experienced this. For a woman to lose her hair is devastating but I’m glad to hear she has not let it hold her back.

Abbeygran Sat 01-May-21 14:22:39

Kasimo, keep an eye on it, you don’t want to see it coming out like mine. I do believe our hair does change as we age, and I accept that, but I’d be distraught if it all came out!

Abbeygran Sat 01-May-21 14:26:28

Grandmabatty, thank you for your reply. I’m pretty sure it’s to do with vitamin D, but I will consult with my GP, just to be doubly sure- strangely enough my eyebrows are a little sparse!

Blossoming Sat 01-May-21 15:05:30

I would ask to have a thyroid test as it can affect skin and hair.

Abbeygran Sat 01-May-21 18:32:11

Thank you Blossom, I’ve booked an e-consult with my GP surgery to request a blood test.

Ooh, it looks like you've cracked it Abbey!
I really hope that you get similar results to me. Please keep me posted, I'd love to hear how you have got on x

My hair has been falling out for months no patches just a lot on clothes etc. I have since cut my hair and took advice from Gransnet taking vitamin d tablets. It hasn’t stopped falling out but it’s improved a lot I think it’s just age I’m sixty four.

FannyCornforth Sat 01-May-21 19:09:48

Hi Redhead if you are vitamin D deficient, the OTC stuff won't make a difference. You need the super strength stuff, ask for a blood test.
Sorry - I sound dead bossy, but I'm a bit of an evangelist about this!

I think the GP appointment is a good idea. I have lost all my hair as I've posted many times. It's devastating. There's no other way to describe it. No one could find a reason. I've tried to convince myself that it could be worse and at least I'm not ill but it doesn't work. It's horrible. It's affected me very badly. I hope you find a solution.

Your daughter sounds wonderful keepingquiet

I have same problem have hypothyroidism, on steriods have been for several years continuously, hair thinning, ends of brows have disappeared, hair is frazzled and fine

Ro60 Mon 03-May-21 01:17:53

when I started HRT my hair started to grow again and recently, I've got longer lashes too.

Esspee Mon 03-May-21 06:39:46

I have been taking HRT for 32 years now and in the last couple of years my hair has been thinning alarmingly.
So, based on a sample of one, I don’t think HRT helps. I am putting it down to age.

I too have this problem. Apparently it can be the after effect of having had Covid19 and manifests about 90 days after recovery which fits in with my experience. I have also been taking medication daily since having covid which has hair loss as a side effect and sadly I lost my husband to covid 19 in January so it may in my case be a combination of all 3 things. I have a telephone consultation with my gp tomorrow to discuss so fingers crossed there may be a remedy which can help me.

FannyCornforth Mon 03-May-21 07:09:56

Hello travelsafar you've been through such a lot. Like Churchill said 'when you're going through hell, keep going'
thanks
Hair wise it could be vitamin D, it seems to crop up a lot with Covid.
My husband (who was hospitalised with Covid) has had his lungs and breathing checked out last week and is going to have his heart looked at tomorrow; and then he is booked into the post Covid clinic.
Best wishes to you, and hope your consultant goes well tomorrow.

Hi Abbeygran,

There could be many reasons why your hair is dull & lifeless. As you already indicated that your scalp and skin is dry. Other than the dry skin, there are many problems such as:
1. Dullness
2. Dry Hair
3. Hair loss
4. Split ends
5. Heat damaged hair
6. Frizzy Hair
7. Oily and greasy hair
8. Gray hair

Moreover, your hair beauty depends upon several factors like genetics, health, weather and how much care you put for your hair. There are solutions to it. you should follow these points :

1. Diet matters a lot
2. Stress is not good for your hair health
3. Maintain a proper hair routine
4. Choose hair products carefully
5. Avoid Hair Dyeing
6. Avoid heat styling
7. Improper brushing
8. Avoid taking a lot of coffee
9. Avoid Alcohol
10. The presence of Hard Water in your home

Travel so far, I’m so sorry that you lost your husband to COVID. I too had COVID in January so it could well be due to that. I’ll still have blood tests to check out thyroid, just in case. Good luck with the GP, hope all goes well for you ?

Thank you, I will indeed Fanny, at the moment I’m scared to death it’s all going to fall out.

Abbeygran Mon 03-May-21 16:36:16

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I note that stress can cause hair loss - I’ve recently realised how stressed I feel about so many things, so maybe that is the reason. I’ve also had a bad dose of covid in January, I have very low vitamin D and on prescription strength tablets, or it could be thyroid- hoping the GP can confirm what is happening and how to stop it getting any worse - I’m sure blocking the vacuum cleaner roller is in no way normal! ? ?
