Bladder prolapse

Hi all,
Is anyone currently undergoing a bladder prolapse (Cystocele) repair? I’d like to bring myself up to date with current treatment options if possible. I know the ‘mesh’ is no longer used, and as my prolapse is getting worse, I’d like to know what treatment options might be offered before I go and see someone. Eg Exercise, pessary, surgery, even alternative therapies, laser etc. Also if anyone has recently had a surgical repair done, how long is the recovery period and can you return to usual activities like exercise after it’s healed? Any or all advice around this subject would be welcome. Many thanks in advance.

Hello Sunflower2, sorry to hear that your prolapse is getting worse. I sympathise as I too have one. I've seen a Gynacologist and have another appointment in August. I presume I will need an operation so I hope that others have experiences that they may wish to share. Thank you .

I had a hysterectomy for prolapsed uterus along with cystocele and rectocele repairs. I had very little pain but was tired and weak for quite a while. The main thing is to plan ahead as you cannot lift much for a few weeks.
Pessaries are an option if the prolapse is not too severe - they did not work for me. Exercises do make a difference and I need to do mine regularly still.

I had a cystocele and rectocele repair op 33 years (!) ago. Unfortunately the bladder repair has now failed. A ring pessary is not working and it looks as though I shall have to have something done again. Has anyone had the operation performed twice?

I had a bladder and part bowel prolapse repaired two years ago. I was in hospital 3 nights and felt very weak for a few days afterwards. I was advised not to lift anything heavy for at least 6 months. I was walking to the local shops within a week and have been perfectly alright ever since. A really worthwhile operation. My sister in law had a bladder prolapse at the same time and just has a ring pessary.

Sar53,
Sorry to hear you’re having similar problems. I’d be very interested to know what suggestions they make regarding treatment at your August appointment if you’d be kind enough to let me know. In the meantime good luck.

I saw a consultant gynaecologist for vulval lichen planus (painful sore skin down below) and at the same time was told I had a cystocele, but was told if it retracts at night, which is does, there is no need to worry about it. There has been no follow up so I would be interested to hear what happens and what treatment is suggested, Sunflower 2. Years ago my second baby was big and I was told by a nurse to practice holding on when I passed urine, but having worked as a medical secretary in urology in a hospital I learnt that information was totally wrong. Pelvic floor muscles are somewhere in the middle and nothing to do with the bladder, and also the exercises have to be practised correctly for some time before any improvement shows.

Glad it went well for you.

Yes, I’ve heard stopping mid stream is no longer recommended.
I feel pelvic floor muscles would only prevent the bladder descending through the vaginal opening rather than preventing a prolapse completely, although I’m sure they’re still very important.
