Hate my teeth

I have horrible teeth! My granddaughter asked me why my teeth are brown. My front teeth are a mixture of fillings of different colours and a bridge. Because of that ordinary whitening treatment wouldn’t work. I’ve considered implants but I’ve had one nearer the back and had to have bone made as I didn’t have enough. So it was even more expensive so I couldn’t afford to have 6 done. My dentist thought she might be able to crown them but now is retiring.
I try not to smile. I’ve never smoked and have looked after them as best I can.

Oh I know how you feel! I think on those "Ten years younger" programmes that the biggest change is always the teeth. I'd love to be able to afford to have mine done (though not a la Katie Price!) I believe it's a lot cheaper to go to Poland. Anyone done that?

Often it’s only at the back where bone grafts are needed. You could always have a consultation to see what needs doing. A friend of mine is going to Hungary to have hers done- 1/3 of the price here.

I had the brown teeth pronlem you mention Ellie Anne, my, then 5 year old DGS asked me why my teeth were so brown. My dentist suggested I had 'composite' put on my teeth and that has worked very well.

I have tried to find out exactly what I had done online but all I can find is information about composite veneers, which are very expensive and I certainly didn't have that treatment.

The dentist just spread or painted a substance on my teeth that hid the brownness where the natural dentine had worn away, a bit like nail polish, I think!. It was done about 5 years ago and has worked very well. I cannot remember how much it was, but more likely £100 or so for 4-5 teeth, not the £500 plus quoted for each veneer.

If you have a private dentist I would ask them about it. Possible get the exact name for the treatment I had and google it.

3 years ago my friend had implants and veneers done in Turkey. Amazing results.
I can’t remember if it was 5 or £7,000.
That price included flights, hotel and a 3 month check up in London. She was there for 5 days.

I lose my nerve every now and then going to the dentist. I think it's bad experiences as a child I did find a decent dentist before lockdown. My teeth have not been looked at over two years now. They are ruined because I ate so much citrus fruit. Trying to get my cholesterol down it didn't work. I know the enamel is weak now. I keep trying to pluck the courage up to make an appointment but don't. It's ridiculous I know sixty five and scared I think I will have make an appointment soon.

MOnica I had my top front ones done last year, composite bonding, it worked well, I’m having something similar done to my bottom front 4/5min May. I’m very happy with the top.

400 years ago, I had stained front teeth which my (then NHS) dentist made crowns which he pinned into the roots. Now, all those years later, the crowns have served their purpose and the roots were showing signs of infection. So my current dentist suggested a denture. I'm too old for implants - my gums wouldn't stand up to the preparations. So a denture it is and it both feels good and looks good.
I loathed our dentist when I was a child. He really seemed to dislike children, though he had two himself- I knew them from school. But in recent years, I've been lucky with my dentists who have always gone out of their way to make everything painless.

400 years? Not quite! 40 years ago!

Maybe try a new dentist? Ask for a quote to fix? Then go to another and see what they suggest/ quote. It’s such a big decision and expense you need to be 100% confident in the dentist & their work. Personally I would stick to a dentist near home - in case of problems.

Shez1955 Wed 30-Mar-22 22:27:11

I personally wouldn’t go abroad for implants as it’s the follow up treatment that is required. I’ve had implants on my top gum and 4 on the lower at great expense! Pain free as I was under.

I will try to find out about composite bonding. Thank you.

Same here Ellie Anne. Not got a bridge or implant but teeth at front going brown and grandchildren are commenting. They are also squint. I wish I had been treated with braces when I was young but it wasn't suggested. Going to dentist next week after over 2 years (Covid) so will ask about composite bonding.

Callistemon21 Wed 30-Mar-22 23:54:22

I've never heard of composite bonding, M0nica
Thank you for the information, I shall enquire

M0nica Thu 31-Mar-22 00:07:56

Thank Jaxjacky she is the one who remembered what it was called

Callistemon21 Thu 31-Mar-22 09:32:07

Thank you JaxJacky too ?

I sympathise, hate my teeth too at the moment. A big piece broke from the back of a front crown yesterday, got an appointment tomorrow but not looking forward to it. Hoping the crown can be replaced don't want a gap!

I have a small chip on my front tooth, not too noticeable to others but it irritates me, it happened when I knocked it with my fork (not hard) when eating, probably because the enamel has worn very thin over the years, especially at the very edges. I feel like my teeth are slowly fading away. I have been thinking about having composite bonding, just on the top front few, I’ve seen before and after pics from a local dentist and the results looks pretty good. I’m just unsure on the cost and how long they would last. Having said that I would prefer to leave them as they are rather than have those awful ultra white veneers, they look ridiculous.

Jaxjacky Thu 31-Mar-22 16:21:17

Sacha I was told 10 years plus.

SachaMac Thu 31-Mar-22 16:28:11

That’s interesting, thank you Jaxjackyit would make it worthwhile if they last that long. I think I’ll make enquiries.

Update.
Had a routine appointment with hygienist today and broke down .
She is referring me to a dentist who may be able to help.

Don’t you just love it when DGC point out things that polite adults wouldn’t? I was considering some cosmetic dentistry then with the lockdown felt there was no need. Now I’ve lost the will and inclination to go ahead, also the thought of long dental appointments, not to mention expenses.

Ellie Anne Sat 07-May-22 17:07:15

Saw dentist yesterday. There is so much wrong but he has a few ideas. He didn’t mention composite bonding and I was so stressed I forgot to ask. He maybe able to crown the front ones. He’s going to work out a plan with costs and see me next week.

Exactly how I feel. I had plans to replace my bottom teeth (very crooked) but have lost the will, even though granddaughter has noticed them. ?

Jaxjacky Tue 17-May-22 12:44:45

I’ve just had my bottom teeth done, splinted, these were wobbly and uneven. I’m extraordinary pleased, I detest the dentist but it had to be done, took about 50 minutes, top ones a while ago weren’t wobbly, but took a couple of hours.
