Become a Dementia Friend

Public Health England, Alzheimer's Society and a host of celebs are joining together to encourage one million people to learn what it means to live with dementia by becoming a Dementia Friend.

Just a little more knowledge and insight into the condition could help make life better for those like Gina, the real star of the Dementia Friends campaign.

Could you help by becoming a Dementia Friend?

Public Health England and Alzheimer's Society have joined forces with more than a few of the country's celebs in a major new campaign to mobilise the whole of the UK in tackling one of the biggest health issues facing England.

The Dementia Friends campaign encourages people to become a Dementia Friend - which means understanding the challenges faced by people with dementia and learning a few useful tips to help make life better for those living with the condition. People like Gina, who features in the campaign's celeb-studded video - With a Little Help From My Friends.

Becoming a Dementia Friend is simple - individuals watch a short online film, which explains what dementia is, how it affects individuals and what people can do to help those living with the disease.

Becoming a Dementia Friend is simple - individuals watch a short online film, which explains what dementia is, how it affects individuals and what people can do to help those living with the disease.

Once they've watched the film, they sign up to receive a Dementia Friends badge (to show their support), and Little Book Of Friendship, which includes further ideas and tips on how to help people with dementia.

The third option (if you prefer the personal approach) is to attend a face-to-face awareness session run by Alzheimer’s Society in your area.

Visit the website for more information on becoming a Dementia Friend. In the mean time, pop over and have a look at the behind the scenes goings on at the making of the video above and remember to share...

Sounds a good idea. Unfortunately I do not think it is for me - I worked on a dementia unit for 10 years, my mother had dementia, and OH has PD which carries a risk of dementia - enough already!

I hope others will feel able to get involved.

I don't understand why this doesn't happen naturally - surely it does? I helped a clearly confused man the other day, it was apparent that he didn't quite know why he had parcels (of groceries) or what to do with them (he was taking them out and turning them over and putting them down on the floor and looking around, clearly confused). Anyway I stopped and spoke to him and soon there were 3 people faffing over him (in a nice way). So I left the other 2 to it and went on my way.

"...taking things out..." not them.
