Regarding depression ..

Humans possess the ability to change their minds and as a result change their brains - With effort a person can create a healthy mind-scape from the dust of rumination and refraining from using empathy received via support to reinforce their negative mental states- They can gently adopt lifestyle changes that promote well being-

With sincere and consistent effort, one can liberate themselves from depression -- even after decades of suffering-

I love your language but however sincere we may all be here it is never ever as simplistic as your post above. 21st Century living reflects the impact it can have on anyone's mental health. In fact there should be more empathy for ourselves and thus others fuelled then by large doses of learned resilience plus support from the likes of this site are all useful. Dawn22, I didn't suggest the regimen is simple to do- I briefly outlined what people who suffer from depression have the ability to do-

You pointed out that the stressors of modern society impact mental health- And that is certainly true- But it's also true that people who are stuck in the cycle or habit of ruminating use such facts to sabotage any chance of recovery without realizing it, their mind being drawn towards negative thoughts-

Asked if anyone has experience of mirtazapine on a thread that seems to have closed. Is this the wrong place to ask? Am new to all this. Advice would be much appreciated

Merelina so sorry there was a mix up yesterday , sorted now. Yes this is the right thread and someone will have experience of that medication, being a holiday week end things may be quiet but please stay ,I am sure you will have an answer x

Joce345, yes - I've been depressed - And from experience know one can be free from it - And once free, one will notice what others do to perpetuate their struggle -- because I did similar too -

I'm not saying that once free from it that it will never come back, but once free from it one is aware of its attempt to return and make efforts not to let it - But .. If it does, one can get back out of it again with effort -

With all due respect rose what may have worked for you will not work for everyone and I suspect your depression was not clinical but more a case of feeling sad.

Dragonfly, I do respect your response because defending depression is part of the problem, along with defensive, dismissive assumptions that one who recovered from depression was just sad - Its exactly that type of defeatist thinking that perpetuates depression - Carrying out those tasks require energy, energy that could be being used to do the opposite: Take notice of when you defend depression -

Many aspects of depression are hinged on unhealthy habits -

Thankyou Oldandveryverygrey. Has mirtazapine helped and how much do you take? I am looking after frail husband and finding it hard to cope. As the situation is the cause of my anxiety and is unavoidable I wonder if medication will help. Would be glad to hear how others are managing

I am sorry rose but I am depressed because I have cancer. At the moment it is inoperable. I am taking tablets in the hope it will shrink but no sign so far.
The bad habits you mention are you referring to the ones which caused the cancer or how I deal with it. If you have any suggestions for how I can return to me former positive happy self I would be most grateful.

dragonfly, I detect a bit of sarcasm in your replies - smile I believe you still are that happy, positive person buried beneath the weight of your current concerns - So how about we talk about her, the person you think you used to be, and bit by bit reclaim the happiness being held hostage by your former self -

As far as your cancer is concerned, both sarcasm and comedy, laughter and joy are forms of support, too -

The girl I used to be as a teen got drunk and jumped over a chain, almost -- if both feet didn't get caught on the chain, resulting in me landing on my face - Knocked the wind out of me, it did - But once I caught my breath I lay there laughing and crying at the same time -

My husband died - He suffered from crushing depression the majority of his adult life - A misanthrope with a brutal sense of humor, made me laugh so hard I cried - But ruminating ruined his quality of life -

Grandchildren and son in law meeting up in Cornwall

Have therapy appointment today, not feeling positive

With respect, Depression is an illness and to imply that those suffering are not making a “sincere and consistent effort” is uneducated psychobabble of the worst sort.

henetha it is a four day holiday, seems everyone is bustling about joyfully , it isn’t so . I am struggling today , telling myself ‘this too will pass’, .
