Numb arm and hand

Hello Everyone
Sorry, it's me again, with yet another health concern.
I've been recently been diagnosed with oa, and also spinal stenosis (in the lumbar region).
Today I woke up with pain in my shoulder and my arm and hand keep going numb and pins and needles-y.
I stupidly googled and it seems it could be some sort of nerve damage.
I already have nerve pain in my legs due to the stenosis.
Obviously if it was a week day I'd ring the doctors.
My anxiety is now playing up. sad
Just wondered if anyone has had similar, and needed someone to hold my tingling hand...

Baggs Sat 06-Mar-21 09:45:34

Virtual handhold, FC ?
I sometimes get pins and needle spasms in my legs. Up till now I've just regarded it as annoying but maybe I'll mention it next time I see my GP (which, with any luck, might not be for years).

geekesse Sat 06-Mar-21 09:45:44

For goodness’ sake, get urgent medical advice. It could be the start of a stroke.

Fanny. Anxiety and also heamaplegic migraine can cause your symptoms
You have many conditions which may be causing it also

Just wanted to give your hand a squeeze ?

FannyCornforth Sat 06-Mar-21 09:56:20

Thank you everyone, I didn't think I'd get any replies.
Geekesse I know what you mean, but I'm sure that it isn't. I might phone 111 though.
I wish that GPs were still available at the weekend...

Fanny why not phone 111 for advice? I’ve compressed nerves top and bottom of my spine causing similar symptoms so your self diagnosis could be right but it could well be totally wrong. Google isn’t infallible! The best thing in my view for both your anxiety and physical health is to phone 111 and take their advice.

BlueSky Sat 06-Mar-21 10:02:47

Yes try 111 to put your mind at rest Fanny especially after Geekesse’s reply! shock

Marydoll Sat 06-Mar-21 10:10:22

Fanny, just phone, please, you know you should!

geekesse Sat 06-Mar-21 11:20:54

I speak from experience. Many years ago a work colleague complained of numbness and pins and needles in her arm. The next day we were told she had died that night. A few years ago my then gentleman caller complained of the same symptoms, and I begged him to let me call an ambulance, but he was having none of it. He did eventually go to casualty, but not soon enough for them to reverse the brain damage that led to serious one-sided weakness.

grandmajet Sat 06-Mar-21 11:24:10

Yes, Fanny, do phone 111 urgently.
It may be that you just slept awkwardly, but better safe than sorry.

Lexisgranny Sat 06-Mar-21 11:32:31

Fanny, do get everything checked out as soon as you can, and insist on getting to the bottom of it, my experience is that things generally seem much worse without an official diagnosis, and even if it is something that needs attention, you have caught it early on. I would say try to avoid the temptation of looking things up on t’internet, but then I would be guilty of hypocrisy and might have to follow my own advice!

You seem to have had a really bad run of health problems lately, I do know how this feels, you have my sympathy, hang on in there.

BlueSky Sat 06-Mar-21 12:11:42

Good god Geekesse! I’ve had that symptom in the past, then it just went. I would have worried myself sick had I read your post then!

Dorsetcupcake61 Sat 06-Mar-21 12:24:57

Sending you a hug Fanny?. Best to phone 111 as could be something and nothing but better than worrying.
In defence of Geekese her reply may have been a bit blunt but when you described your symptoms it was my first thought.
Last year my friends partner had a pain in his arm. He didnt think much of it as had caught his arm on a door that day. Woke up next day and had slight numbness/pins and needles. Nothing drastic but not quite right. Hes a bus driver so went to A&E. He had indeed had a stroke. He was in hospital a few days. Hes made a reasonable recovery but weakness to one side and some problems retrieving words. Hes in his early 50s and now has lost his job.
It's not an indication of a stroke I was familiar with.
I'm sure all will be well but please check it out?

geekesse shock It is a serious worry for FC but this isn't going to help except to really scare FC.

Let us know how you get on with 111. You don't want this added to your other health concerns . Good luck with a quick answer.

Charleygirl5 Sat 06-Mar-21 12:56:42

Depending on exactly where the numbness is it could be coming from compressed nerves in your neck.

Livlass Sat 06-Mar-21 13:25:57

Hi everyone. My husband is 80, last few years he has been burping a lot and ‘throat growling’ virtually non stop. Of course I advised a doctors visit but this was a definite no. We have a good diet, nothing spicy. He is very fit for his age, swims and exercises a lot. Has never smoked or drank to excess. I,m thinking maybe this is now becoming a habit and he doesn’t even realise it’s happening. He does it when he’s reading, even when he’s on the phone. But it’s getting on my nerves. I,m worried there is something wrong. Any ideas?

Charleygirl5 Sat 06-Mar-21 13:56:58

Livlass- you really need to open your own thread as this is a different and specific subject opened by FannyCarnforth.

Please take the gransnetters advice FC and make that phone call.

Good god Geekesse! I’ve had that symptom in the past, then it just went. I would have worried myself sick had I read your post then!

But she does know what she is talking about ! Come on Fanny tell us you have called 111 please.

Katie59 Sat 06-Mar-21 15:48:04

If it happened to me I would get to A&E where they have an after hours surgery, they are very good. They have everything they need to check you out even better than your GP would.

FannyCornforth Sat 06-Mar-21 15:57:36

Hello
Sorry everyone, I didn't phone in the end. Don't shout at me!
I'm on pregabalin for nerve pain (only started it a few days ago). I took my dose after I posted.
Anyway, I don't know whether that has done the trick, but it's gone now, well, much improved anyway.
I've also read that lying down makes it worse. So I've now got zero comfortable positions in which to place myself hmm
Thank you so much for your concern and advice. I know that I say this a lot, but you really are very kind. thanks
PS if it happens again I will ring 111. Promise.

grandmajet Sat 06-Mar-21 17:23:50

Phew, I’m glad you’re feeling a bit better.
It’s horrible not being able to get comfortable. Have you plenty of soft pillows to support you in a semi upright position for reading watching tv, posting on gransnet - all the essential activities?!
Wishing you a good night’s rest.

BlueSky Sat 06-Mar-21 17:55:57

Lucca whether Geekesse is right or wrong, having read that somebody with similar symptoms had died, would have given me a panic attack!
