Rugs that don`t damage laminate floors

I think I have been lucky. Just discovered that the backing on my turtle mat rugs is degrading, carried one rolled up rug and my hands got covered in black dots from the backing. It has been stored for a few months, never damp. Now I read that rubber and latex backing on rugs can damage and/or discolour even expensive laminate boards. All 4 rugs have de-graded backing. I need rugs, will have to get some new ones for downstairs. Will be living on a building site for many more months. No idea what type. Does anyone know?

Carpet and rug shops sell anti-slip rug underlay.
We have this under our extra large sitting room rug.
It doesn't matter what type of rug you choose the laminate floor is protected by the underlay (paper thin).

You should have gone for proper wood instead of laminate, or at least have existing wooden floors treated and varnished. No trouble with rugs then.

Buy a proper rug made from wool or natural fibres with a canvas backing and if you need underlay get good old fashioned carpet felt.

You do not say what size rugs you are talking about. We have wood block or engineered wood laminate throughout our house and except for a small 2 ft x 3ft rug we have had no problems with rugs slipping or sliding. Under that rug we put a piece of anti slip webbing, which has worked well.

We have various types of rug on our laminate floors, flokati, heavy will and sort of rubber backed and have never had a problem with any of them!

EllanVannin you should get a prize for least helpful comment! grin Suggesting to someone what they should have gone for, when they are asking for advice regarding their current situation..............

EllanVannin did you not think that money may come into the equation? We cannot all afford solid wooden floors.

I've had both laminate flooring and Karndean vinyl and have put black rubber backed mats on both of them and had no problems with either type. The laminate floors had black rubber backed mats on for 10 years; the Karndean vinyl for 2 years.

We have a rug on a wooden (not laminate) floor and the floor has 'mellowed' everywhere except for the area underneath the rug, so that is now a different colour.

The above could be the 2nd least helpful comment! grin

Laminate should be fine with new rugs - just check that the underneath is not degrading!

crafty....I love Turtle mats and have several large ones on hard floors, have checked the backs and they are fine ( two are old ones, two newer.)
I have never put them in the tumble dryer mind you, after washing, so I do wonder if that could cause it?

I wouldn`t want a solid wooden floor these days, once had genuine lovely parquet and all the tlc that went with it. I have got quickstep impressive in a beautiful matt oak, it is gorgeous and will only need a quick wipe with a microfibre mop. I also have underfloor heating

Thanks for all the help from those who have given me positive help. I do have a couple of small rugs that will do at the patio and front doors for now and yes it might be to do with the age of the rugs. I agree yes, I will be getting canvas backing for the big feature rug in the living room, will wait though, cannot be getting everything at once

I have a beautiful sisal on the stairs, a beautiful match, just a shade lighter than the quickstep. I love sisal, here I have sisal all upstairs and stairs and stone downstairs. It is all about prepping for getting older, easy care floors so I can go cycling instead of polishing

Blimey, it was only a suggestion-----no need for the acerbic attitude !!

I wanted to move a rug that I have in my carpeted (first floor) lounge only to find that the light cream carpet has been dyed by the straw coloured backing of the rug. Not sure if it will shampoo out or am I stuck it?

Jalima1108 Mon 01-Apr-19 13:08:48

Oh! I am off to check mine gillybob, I never thought of that; the rug is just for decorative purposes (well, actually, it's to stop DH scuffing his heels on the carpet but don't tell him that).

It was a bit after the event though EllenVannin grin

And my comment about a rug on a wooden floor was Pointless (do I win a Pointless Trophy?).

Jalima1108 Tue 02-Apr-19 23:08:26

As Cherrytree suggests, you can buy non-slip underlay and cut to size.
If your rugs are still good then you could give the backing a good brush outside and get rid of loose particles, then lay them on the underlay.

I have got rid of the degraded backed ones, they were old and I don`t really need them any more. Will be keeping 2 small with a different back and will lay down a hessian backed runner on the landing. Thanks Jalima and others

I had to remove all the rugs in my house as I was told by the Needs Assessor that "as you age, these become a tripping hazard" shock

I was dying to tell him that applied to LSD and Marijuana as well. grin
