I have had Dyson for years, but what are the other makes like?

Charleygirl5 Tue 20-Oct-20 13:06:05

I like Miele but the cost of bags has become prohibitive as well as it is difficult to find the correct size as mine is quite old now but has served me so well.

I have a Shark lift away which plugs in. It's really good. When I bought it the run time wasn't so long as now so I also bought a very cheap cordless one.

I would buy a cordless Sgark now.

Sebo .Absolutely brilliant on all surfaces but heavy . Totally reliable and worth every penny imo .

I have a Miele and a shark lift away both are brilliant, sorry but I don’t like dysons have had these and don’t rate them, depends obviously what you are wanting to pick up. I have pets and shark and Miele both are very good

Two of my daughter in laws swear by Sharks, and they both have dogs. My wee Dyson cordless is fine for me, and I have a Hoover for ‘ serious’ vacuuming.

Would not purchase anything made by Dyson on principle!!
As with domestic machines you first need to make a list of what is important to you.
eg: lightness, easy to empty, cordless or not, is it just for carpets or also hard floor, do you have a stairway.
Over the years I tried many different types and makes, two years ago, I was given for Xmas the combined upright and hand held GTech, both cordless. At long last I found the vacuum cleaners I needed. Used firstly in my house, with hard floors downstairs and carpets on stairs and upstairs, also the small hand held one, did my car so easily. Then I moved to a flat, all carpet at the moment, absolutely brilliant and so easy to empty and light to move.

I have a cordless Shark Pet Liftaway. It is brilliant.

I still have a Dyson, which is not nearly as good as the original one, and much flimsier. Like you, Franbern, I will not replace it with another Dyson when it gives up (perhaps if I used it more often it would have given up by now...) as I couldn't bring myself to support someone who preached Brexit and then moved production to Singapore. angry

Depends what you want it for, mainly hard floors, carpets, both?

Trisha57 Mon 26-Oct-20 17:45:30

Over the years I have had Hoover, Philips and Dyson cleaners. But for me the absolute best has been our recently purchased Shark Liftaway. Although it's a bit heavier than the others, it is a super cleaner and manoeuvres well (is that the right spelling?)It is also very versatile and cleans all floor surfaces and lifts away for stairs, under low furniture etc. I would definitely recommend it.

I support the recommended model by Trisha57, at first I bought a Dyson handheld model but that was not doing my cleaning as I wanted, then I bought findbestvacuums.com/category/shark-vacuum-reviews/ Shark Navigator NV356E that doing pretty good.

We recently replaced our Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner with a Bissell cordless. I am really happy with it because it is much easier to empty than the Dyson, it has lights at the bottom so you can see where you are vacuuming and it has three levels of suction, the least powerful is good for cleaning rugs. The only negative is that it doesn’t have many attachments but as I have a GTech hand held that isn’t a problem.

Miele is by far the best.

DS has a wife who was brough up in the States . She came into their living room one day after a bit of hoovering and said to DS " your vacuum sucks " She did not understand why he laughed.

Halo capsule,Made in UK absolutely great. I have come away from Dyson and I would not go back to them again...l

I badly need to replace my dyson cordless and my Miele corded, both are on their last legs, the dyson isn’t really a problem, but the corded one, for serious cleaning, I really want to be able to physically see and feel.
I don’t think I want another Meile, I
find the balance annoying, as soon as you pull out the hose, it topples over and crashes into things.
I’ve heard really good things about Sebo, but am reluctant to purchase without having a good look at one.

My Dyson weighs a ton, so I've bought a robot vac. AS DH is a gadget man par excellence, he has taken control of the thing and operates it remotely. Perfect!

I shan't be going back to a hand held vacuum cleaner anytime soon.

Casdon Wed 17-Feb-21 22:27:50

I’ve got an old Miele cylinder vac, the suction on it is still amazing after about 10 years, I use it for hard floors and stairs, and when I want a really thorough clean on the carpets too, although it’s hard work on carpet.
I’ve got a Shark pet cordless as well which is for quick cleans. It’s great on carpet, but very poor on the stairs, and not brilliant on hard floors either. My only other criticism of the Shark is that I find it heavy as the motor is on the handle, which makes my arm ache if I use it for more than a few minutes at a time.
After much research we got my mum who’s in her nineties a G-tech, which is much lighter to use as the motor is in the base, and still does a good job.
If I had lots of money I’d try a new Miele cordless next time, but they are about £400 so I’d need to try it out first.
