Mucky Loo, any cleaning tips?

I live in a 400 yr old cottage on a septic drainage system, so DH is adamant that I shouldn't use any chemical cleaners in the loo. Does anyone have any tips on " natural" products I could try. I try to give it a good scrub regularly, but it never looks or smells clean.

Coca Cola ?

My DH lives in France with the same issue. He uses natural products most of the time but occasionally gives it a deep clean with a chemical cleaner, claiming occasional use is OK.

COCA COLA is the best!

I read that putting some bicarbonate down each night will clean the stains.

We have a septic tank and very hard water. I use 14% vinegar gel.

Should have said*Normandygirl*, if you are actually in Normandy (we are), then the biocoop shops have it and you can normally also find it on the rayon with all the other products of natural cleaners in larger supermarkets.

Is Coca Cola not a chemical?!

Remove the water in the bowl by pushing it round the u-bend with a toilet brush, spray sides with white vinegar, sprinkle liberally with baking soda and scrub with a scouring pad.

As your DH is the one stipulating what should / shouldn't be used to clean the toilet, I suggest that you delegate that job to him!

Thankyou for all the suggestions, I will try them all out including handing the job to DH grin

I wonder if the liquids used in caravan and motorhome loos would be helpful. We are currently using one which is "friendly" for septic tanks as so many caravan sites request that.

We have a septic tank. I use Harpic, no problem.

We also have a septic tank, I use bleach - no problem!

If you google Pinterest asking how to clean a specific type of loo you will receive many tips. It is really good.

OP’s husband may be confusing a septic tank, which simply collects everything and is emptied periodically, with a biodigester which digests the stuff, has a run-off of clean water to a watercourse and is cleaned and serviced about once a year. We had one at our last house. You have to be careful not to upset the ecosystem which does the work of digesting and filtering, but I used Harpic with that too with no ill effects.

Best solution: person who complains to chemicals used - cleans loo himself.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 30-Sep-22 11:00:03

Right!

Mamie Fri 30-Sep-22 11:11:36

Our septic tank consists of three chambers and a pump to run off the remaining water in pipes up the garden. We treat it every six months to maintain healthy bacteria, though I will need to do it again when DH finishes his current course of antibiotics. It has to be emptied every four years by a specialist with a tractor pulling a tank and is inspected every 10 years by the local authority or before a house sale. We never, ever use bleach.

Put Bacardi down followed by vinegar. Then stand back. There will be effervescence as it does it’s stuff.

I have a sceptic tank and most manufactured wc cleaners do state they are ok for sceptic tanks but you do need to be careful. I now use something called Muck Munchers which you put down the toilet once a month ( they send a reminder) and it balances the bacteria in the sceptic tank so they work effectively. It is an entirely natural product.

Not Bacardi - BICARBONATE. Stupid predictive text.

We had a septic tank in France (fosse) used bleach very occasionally, it was fine.

I have read before about the cleaning properties of Coca Cola yet astonishingly, people still drink the stuff!

It started off as an industrial cleaner I believe.
