family mediation

Can any of you Legal Eagles out there give me some information about Mediation Counsellors? My DS & DIL are currently arguing over my DS's access to the children after their impending split. Are Mediators bound by any code of conduct, for instance? Do they see the parties separately or together? Are the children ever consulted? All information gratefully received!

HI specki. Mediation is usually much more successful than litigation in securing agreements that all parties abide by. There is a training and accreditation programme and all mediators who are registered with the Family Mediation Council have to adhere to a code of practice: http://www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk/5.html.
A mediator will often see the parties both separately at first and jointly thereafter. The children may be involved dependant upon circumstances and their ages.

Has anyone any experience of family mediation, how it works and whether it was successful in resolving issues. I am interested in taking this route to try and resolve differences with my son and contact with my grandchildren
