A couple of years ago I left my High Street bank and opened an account with First direct which is purely online. I am quite happy with it but I’m getting a bit worried about all the stories about hacking. The rate they are closing High Street banks as well looks like in the not too distant future online banking may be the only option....Thoughts please

I bank on-line, but don't feel comfortable installing the app on my phone in case I lose it.

Very easy from my laptop, can't see the need to have it on my phone as well.

Would never recommend Barclays, appalling customer service, and they were forever locking me out for 'unusual activity' such as my supermarket shop, without telling me. After some embarrassing incidents at petrol stations I vowed never to touch them again. HSBC have been okay, though I am uncomfortable with the Chinese connection.

I was wary of it and wouldn’t consider it despite encouragement from my AC. I eventually gave in and installed the banking app on my iPhone about 4 years ago. It’s been problem free and I find it very convenient. I sign in most days for a quick glance that everything is ticking over. I wouldn’t like to be without it now.

Yes we do everything on line or with debit cards. One account is with HSBC and if they notice any unusual transactions they contact us. If we make any payments to anybody new they send us a code to our phone and the payment will only be made after we authorise it. Santander does the same. We never answer emails or texts about our bank accounts, just check the transactions every few days. We disconnected our land lines to stop the possibility of telephone scams. We are very happy with Internet banking and have used it to send money to our children and grandchildren during the past year when we couldn’t see much of them. I honestly couldn’t live without Internet banking, debit cards and direct debits. We actually had a cheque each last week and I had to go into the bank to pay them in, I can’t remember the last time I did it.charleygirl5 if you set up the app on your phone it is much easier to log on, just a 6 digit code once it is set up.

My bank is now advising me by a drop down thing in my iPad every time there is a payment taken out.

You don’t need to go into the bank to pay in chqs. Take a photo of it and send to your bank. It is dead easy and full instructions on the site.

I have one sitting ready to do.

We use a particular computer and a virtual keyboard to do it. Never use our everyday computers because we feel they could be vulnerable.

DH has had too much trouble with thieves spending on his credit card (from a major bank) to be wiling to trust any of them with my money.

I otherwise use the internet for everything else, but where flows of real genuine money are involved, I am still very cautious. My closest friend works with somene who is an expert in these systems - and he refuses to use internet banking. He says it is too easy to hack.

I ve done internet banking for years with Lloyds and never had a jot if trouble in fact they are so on the ball at checking if it’s me paying a new person and using my phone with code numbers to prove it’s me etc

However many years ago when I applied to First Direct they refused me, I was puzzled as I’m pretty good with money and the reason given was I am too clean I ve never owed any money and always paid off cards etc on time that was the reason they did not want me banking with them I suppose they wouldn’t make any money out of me

I have internet banking on my laptop. It's brilliant.

lemsip Mon 19-Apr-21 16:32:05

I check my spending and balance each day. Had my card cloned few years back and didn't notice money gone for a week. I never use outside cashpoints anymore either.

Shandy57 Mon 19-Apr-21 16:32:23

I still use the post office to pay cheques in, very old hat!

crazyH Mon 19-Apr-21 16:40:22

I hardly use the High Street Bank - except the cashpoint..... I manage my accounts online. Have done so for several years and have no problems ...

Online/internet banking is pretty safe and so much easier to keep an eye on things. Just never share things like pins and passwords and if you’re using a laptop make sure you’ve got anti virus etc. If it’s an app on your phone have a secure lock on it. Don’t store pins/passwords on it.

I work in the fraud dept for one of the main banks and see people who are very careful and who refuse to have online banking or shop online etc still become victims of fraud.

My DH worked in a national bank so was obliged to have his salary paid into one of their accounts. As it is our joint account, my salary went in too. (Oddly this gave us fewer banking opportunities than other customers and we were not given a reduced mortgage rate but hey ho.) He worked as an auditor so rigorously checked various aspects in the bank including the potential for fraud and embezzlement. We’ve used internet banking for years and always log on with the iPad as we feel it’s safer. We find the bank constantly checks via text message if we want to make a payment (say to big river) and phones us if we try to use a card when we’re away. This keeps us happy.
Electronic transfers for us are so speedy. We can’t recall the last time a cheque book was used.

I’ve been using online banking for years and never had a problem.

I miss the High Street Bank!
Our last one is closing in June and it's hardly ever open now.
One bank has become a food bank. (clever idea)
When DH died, the bank staff were super helpful and kind, whereas the online so called "bereavement line" was a joke!

I now pay my bills online and it is useful to watch my money disappearing but I am not happy about it.
As for the street- even the charity shops have closed down.

I bank online with Nationwide, and (so far) all is well. Just make sure you don’t press ‘agree’ or ‘continue’ without double and triple checking that all is well

I havent been in a branch for I would guess 20 years. I love online banking.

Annaram1 Tue 20-Apr-21 11:19:36

I don't do internet banking because I am afraid of being hacked and my small amount taken.

vickymeldrew Tue 20-Apr-21 11:24:12

I cannot imagine how I would run my life without internet banking! Everything so straight forward and instant.
Imagine how you would explain the use of cheques to someone and how old fashioned it is. And as for carrying cash around, why would you want to be a target !

I use Co-operative Bank and they have an excellent fraud team. I get the odd phonecall because an ODD purchase was made and they quickly get proof of who I am and get it sorted. Cannot praise them enough. Paying in is at the PO as we do not have a Co op bank nearby.

OldHag Tue 20-Apr-21 11:28:04

I've been banking with First Direct since they first started up, with telephone banking, therefore it seemed like a natural progression to go online when it started. I've never had a problem, and found out the other day from my daughter, that it's even possible now to scan and pay in a cheque without ever leaving the house, which to me, is progress indeed! Not that I get many cheques these days, but it has been a pain having to go 8 miles into town just to pay one in, so I'm over the moon with this facility.

Dearknees1 Tue 20-Apr-21 11:28:06

I'm also a fan of online banking. I use a desk top rather than mobile apps. However I did install apps for my credit cards after one of my cards was used fraudulently. I ignored my bank's calls because I thought they were scams so they stopped my card and I was forced to ring them. It was suggested I install the app so I can easily check on my credit card use and quickly spot misuse. Good advice.
