Has the horse meat scandal made you consider vegetarian options?

?VegfestUK comes to Hove Town Hall this weekend, and they report "a massive rise in interest since the breaking of the Horseburger scandal"

Are you a meat eater who has started looking at vegetarian alternatives because of the scandal?
I have always eaten both meat and non-meal meals, mainly due to offspring at various times whilst growing up 'becoming' vegetarian and then reverting to eating meat. I'm happy to 'mix and match' and I genuinely enjoy a vegetarian diet, but I do like meat a couple of times a week as well.

No, I like a certain amount of meat, though I am happy with vegetarian meals a couple of times a week.

Like you, the offspring went through phases of fervent vegetarianism, but went back to being omnivorous. I still have to cook all-veggie when DIL comes for a meal - veggie is easier than trying to be kosher. She and DS eat mostly veggie and fish. There are not many sources of kosher meat where they live.

Like most people , its the mis-labelling which makes my blood boilangry. It seems to me that some people may now be missing the taste, after possibly years of inadvertant exposure. I'm really lucky, my OH loves to cook , from fresh ingredients

I think the recent palaver has definitely made me think a bit more about where my food is coming from. And the recent 'news' (groundbreaking!) that processed meat is bad for you has at least brought it to the forefront of my mind and I'm a bit more picky about what I buy and more likely to do more veggie meals. My fave is a stew casserole thing with all sorts of root veg (whatever's languishing at the bottom of the fridge), some veg stock, curry powder and then some lentils. Soooo good!

I used to be a vegetarian and I probably still eat more veggie meals than meaty ones. I'm definitely buying fewer ready meals, and I tend to go for shops where they have the provenance on the labelling. I'm a lazy cook - only myself to cook for - and I love ready meals for that reason. However, if I had to live on scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, I will (it's quick and easy - don't judge me!)

I agree Madrigal. Ready meals are a great convenience when you live alone.
I tend to buy the M&S ones because I know they contain no artificial additives or preservatives. It's all things in moderation, isn't it.
I usually cook a big pot of something wholesome, healthy and hearty once a week too, and freeze several portions. I have been known to eat the same meal for 4 evenings on the trot though when I've cooked a big batch. After many years of cooking for a family, the appeal of cooking has worn right off!

I don't think I would like to do without meat altogether, but I seem to eat less of it than I used to.
