Nostalgia

I'm old enough to have nostalgic memories of the crinkly feel of a £1 note and the excitement at the wealth it represented. On the same money theme, I studied hard so I could achieve my goal of earning £1000 ( yes ONE THOUSAND ) a year. Not only did achieve that, when I got a pay rise I bought a brand new car ( on HP) for £750. It was a VERY BRIGHT Daytona Yellow Escort & I thought the looks I got were simply envy!

I got the Bunty and it was great when they had a free gift.....usually a plastic bracelet......real treasure !!!!

Beancounter My first job paid the amazing annual salary of £1,000 too!
Having said that, our first flat (one bd maisonette) cost £19,999.00.
Our next house, a 3 bed terrace, cost £30,000.

I remember wondering how we would ever pay the mortgage on our first house. We had a 95% loan of about £6000 and payments were £68 a month for a three bed semi ( admittedly not in the best part of town). We ate off a wallpapering table & watched interest rates rising to dizzy heights . We suffered a small loss three years later when we traded up to something bigger for the staggering sum of £13,600 - couldn't afford to carpet that for 6 months

Oh yes - those interest rates! Can anyone remember what's the highest they ever went to? I do recall in the early - mid 80s when we had 3 small children that the rates were very scary (and house prices went nuts before crashing again)
