Fashions in children's names seem to change with every generation, if not more often. Not unusual nowadays. But back in my day, during and after WW2 we seemed to be given names that our parents carried.
Some cultures believe that the sound of the name bestows qualities on the individual. Others that the gods smile on those named after them.
What did we consider when we named our children? Possibly that the shortened version was bearable? That Aunt Maude would bequeath some of her millions on her namesake?
And what of the present trend to name children after fruit? Apple, Peaches? Thank heaven that Prune hasn't caught on!
Did you like the name your parents gave you? I desperately wanted to be Jennifer. I was sure I'd be more attractive and successful under that name.
Do you like the names of your grandchildren (over which you don't have the control you earlier enjoyed)?
What's the betting that our grandchildren would choose something quite different if asked (at a reasonable age) what they would like to be known as. Let's hear what they say.
