Occupying little ones?

I'm always looking for new things to occupy my Granddaughters ( aged 8 and 2) and sometimes find it hard to find something new ( and preferably free or cheap wink ). Has anyone got any suggestions for Sunderland and the surrounding areas? Which are the best parks to visit? Places for a nice walk with something special to look at along the way? Free activities?
Thanks for all suggestions!

I do not live in your area but if you want outdoor activities, on your walks, why not take a plastic container and collect items for a nature table? Feathers, pine cones, acorns, conkers even nice shaped stones etc. My granddaughter is 3 and 9 months and at present we are pressing flowers to make a picture. I don't advocate picking loads of wildflowers, just daisies, buttercups clover or flowers from the garden. (Use heavy books if you haven't a press, works just as well). Have a picnic, and take sketch books and crayons along too. If you have one, visit your local museum, we have one which has lovely gardens for children to enjoy. Hope these suggestions are helpful.

Thanks supernanny for the good ideas. There are things there which would occupy both of them! Picnic planning for this weekend underway! Fingers crossed for good weather.
