Making New Friends

Following my post on the 'Ask a Gran' forum, I thought I'd write something here about myself to see if I can find any new friends locally who share similar interests. So, here goes:

I'm NudeJude, I'm 58, have lived in Pembrokeshire for nearly 2 years, but due to a disability have to spend a lot of time in bed, which makes it really hard to meet new friends, so I'm hoping that by speaking up on Gransnet, I might find some like minded, local people.

I think I have a good sense of humour, and am interested in:

Papercrafts - card making, scrapbooking, you name it I'll try it.

Sewing - have made all sorts of things including clothes and soft furnishings.

Quilting - my first venture wasn't a sensible cushion, oh, no, I started with a king size quilt, which was all hand stitched together while laying in bed.

Knitting - again something I do in bed - I've recently made 4 cushions for a cottage that we rent out - each a different design to stop boredom setting in.

Interior design - although our house is still a tip as since moving in, we've had to do a lot to the holiday let, and have only relatively recently started work on renovating our house.

Hopefully that gives you a bit of an idea about what I'm like, so if you'd like to get in touch you can do so by private message, or like me, put yourself out here on the group and maybe meet other people too.

Please don't be shy, we all have to start somewhere smile

Hello Nudejude, such a shame that it would seem no one has taken you up on your little cry for help, although you certainly are interested in a large range of subjects .
I can but hope tha,t much like myself,a very raw newbie by the way,I have found my mark by different postings and joining in wherever I see an opening.

A warm welcome to "my" Pembrokeshire, the county I was born into and have spent virtually all my life, truly thinking it the best thing since sliced bread!!
Unfortunately it has drastically changed over perhaps the last 10 to 15 years, with a massive influx of newcomers, including of course all the bigger stores that hitherto we had to travel to Swansea or Cardiff to partake of them.
Our once very quiet, laid back land that was so sparsly populated........ thus offering such peace, tranquillity and freedom from crime is slowly evaporating.Back then we were the sanctuary for authors, poets, artists, music writers etc and many then............and still do..........love to call this county home.
It is truly a beautiful county and all around offers great views and charm with so much to take in ........if you make the effort to travel round and about.

I hope you have settled in nicely and perhaps are now getting to grips with getting your own home into order.
Sounds as though you have followed many by purchasing a holiday let or lets, and that will ensure you get a good income as tourism has fast surpassed our other main means of survival.............farming and fishing.
It is booming and furthermore going from strength to strength.

Sad to hear you are not enjoying good health and that periods of bed rest halt much of your chances of going out and about..... thus making new friends.
I am much older than yourself, but have suffered with serious health problems since the age of 42, so fully understand much of your situation.
I only wish I had some of your many interests which certainly must be a boon, avoiding too much boredom.
Since my earlier life was completely centred on the out doors, other than my Nursing career, being forever bed or Hospital bound simply is a pest!!!
I love writing and now of course the computor is a handy tool to assist that,I love poetry, and am very much into architecture, design and refurbishing,a great love of mine.
A great home, dog and sea lover.... whilst I like to take care and up to date with my fast failing appearance!

Anyway I thought it a shame that no one has responded to your specific post, hence I have made an effort.
Hope to meet you within the wider groups here, where if you will take a good look, you will find I have kick started quite a few posts and several are doing well.
Sending you best wishes and keep smiling!!

Hallo NudeJude you don't have to be on Gransnet for very long before you start to find people who may be local to you and/or start a conversation with you. Many of us on here have founds friends this way. I'm on here every day at the moment as I am recovering from a foot operation. Do you know how to message someone direct yet? Juts click on their name and the message button will be at the top. I hope you have a good day today. flowers

I rather think...........and hope........we will have collectively made Nude Jude`s day!!!
I also sent her a short message reminding her to have a peep here, so hopefully we shall have a reply from a smiling lady soon.

Hello NudeJude may I suggest if opening a new post that you put the place where you live because that may attract folk who live there. Maybe Making New Friends in (mention a town) in Pembrokeshire. I live in London, a tad far away.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 15-Apr-18 10:48:58

Sorry NudeJude, I am an Essex Granny, but hope some gransnetters close to you get wind of your post. Even looking through all the various posts, makes me feel part of a group of friends and like you I am a relative newbie ?☕️?

Hi NudeJude, Missed your original post. I am also as far east as you can get so not much good for meeting up. I am in awe of all your crafts, especially the hand made quilt, what an achievement. I fear I would never have the patience for such a thing. Do enjoy glass painting but my family and friends have all the painted glass they can cope with! My main interests are my dogs who are getting into agility, though I can't keep up with them! I do wish you well, not always on here but happy to chat when I am. All the best to you.

WOW! First of all I would like to thank Panache for rebooting my post. As she said, you have all made my day! It's a shame that she's the only one who actually lives in Pembrokeshire, but how wonderful that the rest of you took the trouble to write. I do occasionally take part in some of the posts on the site, and thank you Teetime, I do know how to send PMs, and will be responding to Panache accordingly. I do hope that you recover swiftly from your foot operation.

For those of you interested in the nickname, it was purely brought about by my naughty nature! I was trying to think of a name to use, and started looking at things that would rhyme with Jude (Judi) when Nude popped into my head - the sign of a dirty mind, I've no doubt, lol. Hence the name NudeJude was born.

What a shame that some of you who have kindly responded live so far away, it would be lovely if you could all come round for a cuppa.

I'm sure you'll all be pleased to hear that in my attempt to meet new people and make new friends, I've recently helped set up a local group on 'Nextdoor', and am proud to report that through my efforts quite a few of my near neighbours have joined, which is helpful when you want to know what's going on in the area.

I'm surprised to find that a lot of people who take part in conversations on the site, don't appear to have much by way of hobbies, any thoughts on why that is? I think I might just make a separate post on that subject.

Anyway, thank you all for taking an interest in my post, I'm sure we'll all be in touch in the future.

Charleygirl Sun 15-Apr-18 12:38:21

I have never been interested in having hobbies. I suppose that mine is reading but I do not do anything actively or physically. Being partially sighted does not help but in my case is merely an excuse.

Panache Sun 15-Apr-18 12:58:29

Cheers NudeJude and I am pleased that we have helped make your day........and its early yet so goodness knows what maybe in store for you!!

Regarding hobbies oh! yes there was a time when I was fully taken up with mine........cycling,walking,caravanning,beachcombing with my dogs,as well as a passionate gardener...........designing such as well as taking part in all the donkey work!!
In the hot summer of `84 for instance not only did we have a long hedgerow of newly planted leylandi trees that needed daily watering (and some in that heat!) but I had made by hand some beautiful hanging baskets, urns and troughs...........over 80 in total............and my days were filled with endless watering and taking care.
Indoors earlier on reading and writing was very much "my thing" but I have somehow lost my joy in reading over the latter years, poor vision probably the main culprit.
As for writing I continue as ever,in fact it was always a family joke that I had actually been born with a pen in my hand!
Nowadays the faithful PC has come to my aid.I write and I write..............letters,poetry,take part in forums and have even written my life story, which let me hasten to add, does not exactly make great reading ..........hence I have not had the nerve to publish it.....yet.All submitted poetry has actually been published.
Whilst loving home making and my own fashion, both of which have taken something of a knock latterly, due to continued failing health.
I admire your list of hobbies but anything requiring a needle brings me out in a rash!!!...........I am obviously into the arts personally.
Interesting this group you have set up and obviously,a gal after my own heart, never mind what life throws at you.... you refuse to lie down with it but much prefer to get up and give it some gyp!!!
Let that be your life`s motto.
Nice meeting you and yes I rather like your fancy name ........whilst mine represents....... confidence, flamboyance, confidence, self-assurance, style, flair, elan, dash, flourish, verve, zest, spirit..........................well need I go on??!!!!

Its June now and i have only just found this post. Guess what? I live in Pembs, born here and lived here for most of my life. I gave up work 2 years ago in IT and have since concentrated on my hobbies - crochet, weaving, walking and motorhoming. I dont know where the time goes but i certainly wouldnt have time to go out to work.
Yes Pembs is a most beautiful place to live and you cant blame people for wanting to move here but that in itself has caused many problems for the local communities that have existed since time began. A drastic rise in house prices, exodus of young people, lack of housing for local first time buyers and of course lack of decent jobs. On the upside, its idyllic to be brought up here - beach, swim, quiet, low crime rate and safe, nowhere to spend money, except the pubs haha, caldey Island, boat trips, the harbours, the coves, the cliff paths, no traffic queues unless you get stuck behind a tractor or the swarm of visitors who arrive endlessly and the smell of sand and sea.
