How young were the youngsters?

I think colonising another planet may be the only hope for this one! We have always wanted adventure (as a species). Think how little the early sailors knew when they set off around the world - if it was round or flat!

They were unjversity students S2B - early 20s. One was studying Astrophysics.

The costs of colonisation would be out of this world!

Oh ok, they are old enough to make their own decisions.
I agree though, no clue.

Some people dont feel loved, and might go for this idea.

There's no viable atmosphere on Mars. So they cannot go outside unless wearing some kind of breathing apparatus. They cannot grow crops. Everything will have to be imported. Waste and water and the air the breath recycled.

What is the system breaks down? How many spare parts do they store? If they get ill? Get pregnant?

Early explorers had the possibility of finding somewhere to land, to live, to make a home. This isn't the same except for the acceptance of failure.

Imagine being stuck for ever on a rock in space with three other unloved people!!

And if funding was cut?

Sounds like another novel (and a depressing one at that), OK I have no spirit of adventure [sigh]

It reminds me of lab monkeys. They just last a bit longer.

I should imagine that there would be people who would do it though.

But what would happen if they wanted to pull out at say 51 days?
Human Rights would have a field day.
But would they still be bound by earth legalities?
Would they have signed away all earth rights?
Can that be done?
Could they claim that they didnt know properly what they were letting themselves in for?

I agree it is unbelievable

DBH keeps up with all this sort of stuff, being a science geek. He would have applied as a student, if given the chance. And they can't use monkeys anymore - the outcry against it would be greater for monkeys or dogs than it would be for uni students!

I have read a little about it now.

It is not due to happen until 2025.
So I expect it will all get quietly dropped around 2018.

So the students will all be in their thirties by then, possibly married with a mortgage and children...

One of them says "I believe there is more to life than marriage and babies". She is 27, and thinks that with advanced communication, and occasional trips to earth , and 10 years training, she will adapt to life without much family links.

There is going to be an Endemol [aka Big Brother] proframme next year.

Considering that the contestants on there struggle to go without family for 3 weeks..

All silly.

In my opinion, I think that the only way really for people to go, would be to use people who are permanently unhappy.

Are they looking for nominations? I know of a few people who I would like to send to Mars at the moment. Sorry!

I think they should select, estate agents, hairdressers, dental hygienists, traffic wardens, no fee solicitors etc. as the lead party.

hairdressers? What have they ever done to you!

Nothing, but being bald, they are surplus to requirements.

Perhaps they refused to 'service' his comb over?
