Community Service for your Pension

Lord Bichard thinks we should have to do community service in order to get our pension. I wouldn't mind doing a few days in the second chamber (now known as the House of Lords) and I think I could do as good a job as many of them for much less. Do you think he would give his seat up and give me a go? Or does he think that we should be doing much more basic things like cleaning parks etc?

I would want a bit more than my measly pension for sitting listening to them droning on discussing important matters. I would want the full perks - because 'we're worth it'.
What a cheek, I've paid in for my state pittance (which is termed a 'benefit' for some reason).

I'm not going out in this cold rain to sweep streets for him or anyone, sitting in a nice warm Chamber would be fine, as long as I got a chauffeur-driven car too, and an overnight 5* hotel.

I note that his lordship is of pensionable age. When he leads the way in doing community service to justify his pension, I'll follow him - NOT! What planet do these insufferable people live on??

Jalima Wed 17-Feb-16 10:39:12

And does this idiot not realise which sector of society it is who keep the charities going with voluntary work?
He needs a reality check.
Is he part of the Intergenerational Foundation?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 17-Feb-16 10:41:19

I agree jalima. And I am not going to forfeit my free telly licence either, which I will be getting next year. Unless I fall off my perch before then, of course.

This from 2012, it seems to be his pet theme:

I already do my bit by working in a charity shop, as thousands of us do, I have friends who help children learn to read in schools, riding for the disabled etc. So plenty is being done by retired people.I can't think his Lordship was being entirely serious!

rosesarered Wed 17-Feb-16 10:52:04

If he was though.... He must be an oddball.

trisher Wed 17-Feb-16 10:52:16

Thanks Jalima OMG did you see what his pension is estimated to be?!! I assume any attendance at H of Lords will be on top of that. Unbelievable!!!

Tizliz Wed 17-Feb-16 10:53:52

He hasn't chosen his moment very well when so many of us are having to work more years to get the pension we have paid for already. angry

Is it any wonder that a newly retired Gransnetter said the other day that she was at present enjoying her retirement but felt guilty because she was not doing voluntary work. There have been a growing number of articles and opinion pieces in the newspapers and on TV alleging that old people are being subsidised by the young, that all old people are living in the lap of luxury, etc. etc. Certainly, some older people are doing very nicely but it is a huge generalisation to suggest that all are.

Apparently this Lord Bichard retired from his civil service job in 2001 which means that he got his work pension (the average pension for that strata of the civil service being, according to one report I read, £100,000) when he was in his 50's. I wonder if he volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels or to take on any other practical work in the community when he left his job.

Many of the grandparents on Gransnet do carry out unpaid work, either in terms of child care or other activities relating to a charity or the community in general. However, that should be their choice and not something forced upon them, on the grounds that they are a "negative burden on society". How bloody insulting.

It's all part of the "divide and rule" agenda that this government is so adept at. Public service workers, elderly people, immigrants, unemployed people, social housing tenants, sick and disabled people, etc. etc. etc. are increasingly being characterised as a drain on our society. In this way people's attention is diverted away from the real issues of power, privilege and inequality in our society.

This is old news (2012).
I think it was hotly discussed on Gransnet at the time.
This is from
Michael Bichard's Wikipedia entry:
'Bichard came in for criticism in October 2012 when he suggested that retired people should contribute to society by doing community work in order to help the state or lose their pension. Robert Oxley of the Tax Payers Alliance said "it's a bit rich from a civil servant who was able to retire early to lecture us on working during retirement".'
Quite!

Our pension is not a hand-out - we have paid into it. If it were a private pension scheme or insurance then we would have no problem - you pay and you get out according to the rules of the system you have signed up to. I do not feel any sense that I have to contribute something to my locality because of my pension; I do it because I want to. Perhaps this lord needs to get up off his ermine-clad arse, roll his sleeves up and start filling in some potholes.

trisher Wed 17-Feb-16 11:19:31

Not old news janeainsworth the OP link is 17th Feb 2016. He is following up what he has said before which should make us all very afraid, he isn't going to let it drop.

Galen Wed 17-Feb-16 11:23:55

Ive met him and do not like him!

loopylou Wed 17-Feb-16 11:29:42

Naturally he will leave his lucrative role and lead the way?
Idiot is the mildest name i can call him on here......
Privileged prat is another.
?

Marelli Wed 17-Feb-16 11:36:40

The man's an a.se! Not quite so mild....
Perhaps he's attention-seeking - a bit like our wee poster here yesterday. Very similar, in more ways than one, too. grin

janeainsworth Wed 17-Feb-16 12:08:24

Sorry Trisher but I've followed your link (twice) and it's definitely dated October 2012 confused
I'll see if I can find one from today.

NanaandGrampy Wed 17-Feb-16 12:09:19

I'll be going out and picking up rubbish and scrubbing graffiti off walls when every single unemployed , healthy person - who has claimed benefits for years ( and I know a few ) is out there too.

I'll join the white collar prisoners or people doing community service when every one of them is out there too.

I'll be out there when he leads the way quite frankly.

Ana Wed 17-Feb-16 12:17:48

It's an old report. It gives the date at the beginning of the article.

janeainsworth Wed 17-Feb-16 12:17:51

This is the only link that I can find which is dated today.

There is no reference to this bring a recent speech.
I think it's the right-wing press digging up stuff for people to get upset about.
I am not sure what Bichard's current role is but he is not an MP and has no power to influence government policy.
At a time when the government is facing opprobrium for raising the state pension age, I can't imagine that even they would be daft enough to try to bring in his ideas.

janeainsworth Wed 17-Feb-16 12:19:17

Being not bring

Alea Wed 17-Feb-16 12:28:27

Snort! Huh! As if!
Granny duties, ferrying DH to his many rendezvous with the NHS is my idea of community service. And if I have to "work" for my pension I'll have all my NI and superannuation payments back, thank you!!

Alima Wed 17-Feb-16 12:38:34

In a few years when the pension age is 68, 69 or 70 will they have to "work" for their pension too? We have worked for our state pension, they cannot try to make us feel guilty for receiving it.

rosesarered Wed 17-Feb-16 13:02:21

No need for anyone to ' be afraid ' grin it's nonsense.
