That thing where people argue that islamic extremism is caused by Western foreign policies and attitudes to Islam (I said to Islam, not to muslims). I've discovered that it has a name: it's called Carly Simon Syndrome and is described in this article on Obama's views about radical Islam as "an affliction affecting American policymakers so vain that they probably think Islamic extremism, and everything else, is about them".
Is that definition a bit silly? Well, yes, in a humorous way that also makes a valid point. Some people really do seem to think islamic extremism is the fault of the West, otherwise we wouldn't keep hearing the "nothing to do with Islam" mantra when someone claiming to have murdered in the name of their islamic god isn't believed.
The article gives an analysis of Obama's views on the subject and compares them to Trump's. It's a good read and I shall be looking for more stuff by the author, Jeffrey Goldberg.
