Jo Cox Assassin convicted

The man who assassinated Jo Cox was sent to prison today, probably for the rest of his life. I am glad that the judge was clear that it was a political crime - she was not some random victim but was picked out by a right wing terrorist because of her political beliefs and activities.

I hope 'life' means just that in his case. He's a dangerous man.

The family have behaved with much dignity.

I was also impressed with the eyewitness who followed the murderer from the scene of the crime and gave the police precise instructions as to how he could be apprehended.
Not impressed with the Daily Mail which apparently buried this story - a British MP, assassinated by a right wing terrorist - a very long way from their front page.

Jess I have to disagree with you, not about the Daily Mail you understand, but I was only talking with DH about this earlier this evening. These people who commit these crimes, should not in my opinion be given the publicity they crave.

He should be locked away forever and forgotten about, not the terrible thing he did, I don't mean forget about that, but treat him as though he is nothing at all.

Yes the Family have behaved with amazing dignity, and apparently poor Jo Cox was only mindful of her co workers whilst she was being attacked. It is very sad indeed.

I agree with her husband that the murderer did not achieve his aims anyway, and that more good has come out of it than evil.

The Jo Cox charity fund has reached over £1,900,000, a third going to the White Helmets, if there are any of them left.

JessM Fri 25-Nov-16 08:29:19

Sorry Shanma I can't agree because not only did they give the story little coverage. It does not suit the Mail's ongoing agenda which is to whip up hate against immigrants. If a Pakistani constituent had murdered an MP it would have been all over their front page and he would have been called an islamist terrorist whatever the motivation.
Instead they make up the headline that he may have done it because he thought he was going to lose his home to immigrants !!!!!!
The Daily Mail whipped up anti-Jewish feeling in the 1930s, leading to the UK closing its borders to those trying to escape Hitler. They are not going to start criticising the far right now it seems.

I agree JM - the DM continues to plumb the depths

daphnedill Fri 25-Nov-16 11:16:47

I agree. I read that article and was so angry.

GillT57 Fri 25-Nov-16 12:03:52

My god, even by their standards, the Daily Mail have sunk to despicable depths.

Lazigirl Fri 25-Nov-16 12:29:43

The DMs "thoughtful insight" into why Thomas Mair may have murdered Jo Cox. Thomas Mair may have murdered MP Jo Cox because he feared losing his home of 40 years to an immigrant family.

daphnedill Fri 25-Nov-16 12:46:39

I wonder why the DM didn't focus on the bedroom tax Thomas Mair was probably paying to live as a single person in a three bedroom house!

What a load of b**x! I suppose the fear of losing his house to an immigrant family motivated him to acquire a collection of Nazi and racist literature over decades hmm.

Elrel Fri 25-Nov-16 13:31:43

DM trying to satirise itself?

Cunco Fri 25-Nov-16 15:03:02

This thread prompted me to find and read the 2 and a half page spread of the trial verdict on Jo Cox's killer in yesterday's Daily Mail. I am not a regular reader so I read it without prejudging. I thought it was respectful of Jo Cox and her family; and totally condemned her killer. The sub-editor's choice of headline would not have been mine but the article about Mair's possible fears about losing his house was reporting what was said by relatives and neighbours. It was pointed out that these fears were possibly unfounded and, in any case, did not explain why the killer acted as he did.

This was a terrible act against a defenceless woman by a man motivated by hatred. I do not this there is any disagreement about that.

daphnedill Fri 25-Nov-16 15:12:05

The article is unbalanced. The 'fear' about losing his house to immigrants is hypothetical. Where's the emphasis on the extreme racist literature he had acquired and presumably read?

No, Cunco, I don't accept your excuses.

Elegran Fri 25-Nov-16 15:31:13

A bit harsh, dd I didn't see any "excuses"

Cunco Fri 25-Nov-16 15:55:37

I offered one unbiased view. People may disagree. Fair enough. I would no more offer an excuse for the Daily Mail than I would The Guardian. Both can be big enough and ugly enough to look after themselves. Unbalanced comments are sadly everywhere.

In any case, the important part of my comment is the last paragraph which should have read:

This was a terrible act against a defenceless woman by a man motivated by hatred. I do not think there is any disagreement about that.

grannypiper Fri 25-Nov-16 16:15:18

MEANWHILE A YOUNG WOMAN SUFFERED 81 DIFFERENT DOMESTIC ASSAULTS BY HER BOYFRIEND WHO EVENTUALLY KILLED HER, IS SENTENCE ? 4 YEARS FOR CULPABALE HOMOCIDE, AND ALL I HERE IS SILENCE

durhamjen Fri 25-Nov-16 16:25:05

You could start a new thread on that, grannypiper.

daphnedill Fri 25-Nov-16 16:27:18

What's that got to do with it?

By the way, do you have problems with your caps lock?

durhamjen Fri 25-Nov-16 16:39:19

Not just the DM making excuses for him, the Sun as well.

politicalscrapbook.net/2016/11/sun-newspaper-claims-jo-cox-murderer-became-a-nazi-because-of-mothers-black-boyfriend/

Ana Fri 25-Nov-16 16:43:26

I can't see that any publication, or anyone on here, has 'made excuses' for him.

Possible reasons for his extremism have been offered, but not excuses. Let's keep things in perspective.

durhamjen Fri 25-Nov-16 16:57:54

I know you stick up for the DM, Ana, but that's just stupid.

Anniebach Fri 25-Nov-16 17:21:12

It is a question which is asked after every murder, why? The DM put forward a possible reason as to what pushed him over the edge,it did not say it was the reason it used - MAY ,. I dislike the DM but one thing I do credit it with is the fact they openly accused the murderers of Stephen Lawrence .

What of all the why's when James Bulger was murdered ?

I am quite sure one or more will be having s book published

I read no excuse in the post by Cunco , there wasn't one

Ana Fri 25-Nov-16 17:25:24

Durhamjen I did not 'stick up for' the DM - saying that is really stupid!
