Melania and equality

Certain pictures and 'stories' about Donald and Melania Trump are appearing repeatedly on Twitter. It's interesting to compare interpretations.

This one, where Donald gets out of the limo and goes up the steps to meet the Obamas while Melania gets out of the far side of the vehicle and walks up by herself has provoked a lot of discussion reaction.

The most common interpretation is that Donald is a boor/ungentlemanly for not waiting for Melania and walking up the steps with her. I suspect this is based on the premise that he's a boor anyway and, besides, people hate him.

Another interpretation is that he is more of a gender egalitarian than we think because he was behaving just as he would have done if Melania were a man.

The latter interpretation made me wonder if Theresa May 'waits for' Philip May in similar circumstances or whether he just 'follows' in due course?

He is a bully. I have seen behaviour like that elsewhere. See this clip

www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/sympathy-melania-trump-gathers-momentum-9693818

She dare not smile when he turns to her.

MawBroon Thu 26-Jan-17 08:43:56

Perhaps that is why she has chosen to stay on in New York, not their son's schooling. hmm

I am amazed how some people know what others are thinking and what is happening inside the marriage of someone they have never met. Is this a gift or do you go on a course to learn it? - me, I don't even know when my neighbours are having a disagreement

Teetime Thu 26-Jan-17 09:21:46

I do just wonder though if you are married to the leader of the free world (sic) wont you always take second place or even further back. I cant really believe she has such a dreadful life anyway he is going to be away a lot which is a bonus.

MawBroon Thu 26-Jan-17 09:21:58

It doesn't stop in depth relationship analysis or explicit advice on MN or indeed GN based on no more than an OP though does it?

gillybob Thu 26-Jan-17 09:23:45

Whatever you think of DT he really can't win can he?

He walks in front he is a bully and selfish.
He waits for her and lets her go first, he is sexist and treating her like a "little wifey"

Maybe, just maybe, he was so excited to get up those stairs he just couldn't wait. hmm

gillybob Thu 26-Jan-17 09:25:20

....and lets not forget Melania is an intelligent woman who apparently speaks more than 7 languages. I can't imagine her taking any crap. not that I know her of course

That was another story I was going to highlight, yggdrasil. There is another, and a just as plausible interpretation of that quick change of expression on Melania's face. Trump turned and spoke to her during a service. She smiled in response and then realised that another prayer had begun and resumed what observers are calling her "prayer face" immediately, as one would. She also bowed her head slightly. Again, as one would at prayer time.

Much as I am as dubious about Trump's good qualities as everyone else, the prayer face interpretation strikes me as much more believable than Melania hating her husband. Plus, the negative interpretations, as the example above shows, are often taken out of context. Context matters.

thatbags Thu 26-Jan-17 09:32:45

Spot on, gillybob. People are in lynch mob mode with regard to Trump.

Eloethan Thu 26-Jan-17 09:36:44

Well, whatever he said when he turned towards her seemed to have upset her very much - she looked near to tears.

Here is a man who, when campaigning, goaded the crowd to beat up a dissenter amongst them, who thinks that torturing people is entirely justified, who makes fun of a disabled man and who - amongst a number of coarse and insulting descriptions of women - calls a woman journalist a "dog". I don't see how anyone can say his behaviour or speech has been misinterpreted.

whitewave Thu 26-Jan-17 09:38:32

Are you defending him bags?

Can you ignore what has come out of his mouth?

Can you defend someone who against international law is considering using torture?

Can you defend someone who denies climate change simply for profit?

Can you defend someone whose lies are becoming the new truth

Can you defend someone whose politics of division will cause much hardship.

Anniebach Thu 26-Jan-17 09:40:45

I too think the prayer face is the most likely reason for the vanishing smile .

I also think it difficult for many woman to understand how anyone would choose to marry this man

gillybob Thu 26-Jan-17 09:42:17

I think DT is just the "go to" hate figure of the moment.

We should be concentrating on making our own country great again instead of dissecting his every move and mannerism.

TriciaF Thu 26-Jan-17 09:46:27

Whenever I hear her name I think of melanoma. And evidently there is a connection - comes from the Greek melaina which means black, dark.
A melanoma is a mole, a dark spot on the skin.

Anniebach Thu 26-Jan-17 09:46:40

whitewave, all you have listed we have only recently learned of the man, no matter if his wife agrees with him or not she has to carry on for the next four years .

whitewave Thu 26-Jan-17 09:46:58

Melanie is a side track - she is entirely unimportant. If he treats her badly then she has it in her hands to change her life.

I still liked her outfit though

gillybob Thu 26-Jan-17 09:46:59

None of us actually know him though Anniebach (do we?)

ffinnochio Thu 26-Jan-17 09:47:40

As well as context mattering, the specific occasion also matters, which is why I think Trump was being a selfish boor of a man not waiting for his wife to greet the outgoing POTUS and his wife.

I've no idea about T&P May, but expect he would escort his wife In the 'half-a-step behind' way, in the manner that I've noticed with Hilary & Bill Clinton.

I agree about the prayer moment. In fact I don't think he was talking to M. all the time, but just a second before he turned.

Still, who can say, eh? Just very thankful I don't have such intense publicity to contend with.

Eloethan Thu 26-Jan-17 09:48:37

I would think it courteous of a man, or a woman, to wait for their partner in this sort of situation, particularly here, where there must have been a certain degree of awkwardness, and perhaps trepidation on Melania's part.

whitewave Thu 26-Jan-17 09:48:56

iPad spelt her name incorrectly. I am fed-up with my iPad at the moment it continually changes words I have typed. I haven't got time or inclination to continually check

thatbags Thu 26-Jan-17 09:53:48

That is a good point, ww. I've just heard it made by Bre Payton and Mary Katharine Ham (Federalist Radio Hour on the Trump Inauguration) but in a different way. They were talking about what they see as Democrats' "scatter gun" approach to Trump: instead of focussing on a few really important things, they are blasting everything and anything to do with Trump, even, for instance, why the press wasn't allowed into the hotel where he was going to be staying the day before he arrived (to anyone with a brain it's obvious that security measures had to be arranged and put in place; a few American presidents have been assassinated) and some hooha about him avoiding the press when all he did was go and get some dinner in privacy.

Similarly, as you say, Melania is a distraction, part of the scatter gun hits.

MawBroon Thu 26-Jan-17 09:54:13

TriciaF" melanin" is simply the pigment which is varying degrees is responsible for hair, skin, eye colouring. It is responsible for our sun tan if we go on that sort of holiday!

"Melanin: The pigment that gives human skin, hair, and eyes their color. Dark-skinned people have more melanin in their skin than light-skinned people have. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes."

Do you feel the same about the more common name "Melanie"?

daphnedill Thu 26-Jan-17 09:58:42

It's almost inevitable that Trump will have an effect on the UK and we shouldn't dismiss that. I only hope we have politicians and negotiators who will look out for British interests. I also think that his opinions on human rights and climate change will spill out on to the global stage.

However, I agree about the Melania memes. I care as little about her as I do about Angelina Jolie or the Kardashians. I know there are nude and semi-nude photos circulating from her model days and I wonder how the British would have reacted, if similar pictures had ever been found of Samantha Cameron, but they're not our problem.

Michelle Obama had some pretty horrible stuff written about her and I think Melania will never be able to compare with her as First Lady. I assume Melania realised what being First Lady was all about when Donald told her he was running. Personally, I could never have married him in the first place, but she made her own choices.

I'd rather forget about Melania and concentrate on what Trump actually does. Frankly, I don't think his opponents need additional ammunition.
