Las Vegas shooting

How can this be? A man using a machine gun has killed 50 people in Las Vegas.
The news is still emerging but I do hope we don't get the usual nonsense from the pro gun lobby, that if only everyone in the crowd had a machine gun, the shooter would have been killed earlier.

What a dreadful tragedy.
What on Earth possesses people to do this sort of thing?
Playing God?

Luckygirl Mon 02-Oct-17 13:18:14

The gun lobby in the US always says that it is not guns that kill people - how can you argue with folk who are so deluded? There is no way DT is going to even think about challenging them.

Until the anti gun lobby gets its act together these things are going to happen. It will only be when supporting gun ownership loses votes that any progress will be made.

Mad.

This is awful just read the scale of it, 50 dead and over a hundred injured so sorry for those poor people. France had another relatively smaller terrorist incident at the week-end two young girls knifed to death at Marseille train station by some maniac Alahua Akbarring yet again sad so many lives taken in a callous way for what confused

Luckylegs9 Mon 02-Oct-17 13:45:07

What dreadful news. All those people dead and injured, not to say all those traumatised who were there. A bad day for Americia and the world.

Grandma70s Mon 02-Oct-17 15:07:27

More than four hundred injured, as well as fifty or so dead. Sounds as if he was a deranged individual rather than a member of some group.

The US gun laws are beyond belief, but it‘s part of the culture and I’d be surprised if much changes. It’s the 273rd mass shooting in the US this year, apparently. Obviously by far the worst.

Just home from work and catching up with this - how dreadfulsad CNN reporting 50+ dead and 400+ injured......

Imperfect27 Mon 02-Oct-17 16:06:08

There truly are no adequate words, though doubtless the media will try to find many. Just so much sadness for all those who are now experiencing the trauma of loss and injury.

The pity of it is that even something so very awful will not change the gun laws in America.

Greyduster Mon 02-Oct-17 17:20:23

What was the phrase Charlton Heston used in a speech supporting the gun lobby? "From my cold, dead hands!" How many more cold dead hands do there have to be before America comes to its senses?

BlueBelle Mon 02-Oct-17 17:31:18

64 year old man done the shooting.... America and guns don’t get me going

maryeliza54 Mon 02-Oct-17 18:00:18

The anti-gun lobby don't have a prayer - the wealth and power of the NRA who buy senators means that nothing will change. I'm just glad it was an older white man. Before long, we'll get the conspiracy theories ( there is a group in the states that say Sandy Hook was fake news). Then there'll be the fundraising for the injured to pay for their healthcare.

BlueBelle Mon 02-Oct-17 18:09:40

Do you know I wonder if it was as simple as he was annoyed by the noise of the concert close by and just flipped He was from a retirement village
Bloody bloody guns US needs badly to sort it out but they never will especially with the president they now are unlucky enough to have

silverlining48 Mon 02-Oct-17 18:13:21

Are there any usa grans who can possibly explain to us why this gun infatuation ? 30,000 die each year from guns. That is truly awful. Yet dt still supports the rights for anyone and everyone can carry one or two or three, without in many cases, any checks.

silverlining48 Mon 02-Oct-17 18:13:54

Apparently he was a country music fan bluebell.

Grandma70s Mon 02-Oct-17 18:22:14

Las Vegas is in Nevada, where guns don’t have to be registered and there’s no limit on the number a person can own. Are they crazy?

BlueBelle Mon 02-Oct-17 18:23:03

Well I don’t know Silverlining, just a thought, I guess no one will ever know what went though his head but as you have said it’s the whole gun culture that causes the problems

Tegan2 Mon 02-Oct-17 19:21:42

I may have got this wrong/misread it, but his father had been a bank robber. Just wondering if he wanted to be more famous/infamous than his father? As for the gun laws, we've just watched the interview on Ch4 with a pro gun person. The logic (?) beggars belief.

varian Mon 02-Oct-17 19:38:41

If you include suicides the number of people killed by guns in the US in a year is approx 33,000

Elrel Mon 02-Oct-17 19:47:32

It seems he'd never had even a traffic offence before apparently, nor had he been in the military. I saw a report that he had numerous firearms in that hotel room. Appalling and inexplicable, it seems.

loopyloo Mon 02-Oct-17 19:53:14

Even if the Americans banned assault rifles it would help. Why does anyone need 10 guns?. Crazy.

Iam64 Mon 02-Oct-17 20:06:39

Why does anyone need a military gun like a machine gun? I recognise in the US there is a gun owning culture, but an automatic - what possible justification can there be.
Rage seems to be the major influence behind the mass killings. That and the easy availability of guns. The machine gun used in this slaughter didn't have a silencer. Evidently the state of Nevada wants there to be easy availability of silencers for this type of weapon. Again, my question is why. it seems highly unlikely the right to own guns will every be changed in the US. Surely though, it must be time that everyone must have a licence, no one can buy mass weapons and mental health assessments are mandatory, to be reviewed annually. Yes, expensive and time consuming but so are 33,000 deaths from guns shots.

Luckylegs9 Tue 03-Oct-17 07:31:03

I haven't watched the news on this, some things are too horrible.
How was he allowed to have do many weapons? He kept reloading and you have to have a cool head for that, his partner must have known about his arsenal, if she did, she is guilty too.
Hard to think that one man, a grandfather could take those young lives when he's had his life, leave all those families bereft.
If they won't repeal the right to carry arms, make it just one gun under licence, why would anyone want so many weapons. I wish guns and knifes could be banned full stop, but that won't happen, America such a large and diverse country, isolated farmsteads etc. just waiting to be targeted.
Why would Nevada even condone repeat machine guns, fiercest reason, why silencers. They need to look at the carnage left and look at themselves real hard, this wouldn't have happened if people didn't think as they do. It could be their lived ones.

BlueBelle Tue 03-Oct-17 07:40:37

It seems counting the guns they found in his home he owned something like 42
America wake up for goodness sake you can’t buy a kinder egg but own multiple death weapons
Mad mad country

Riverwalk Tue 03-Oct-17 07:51:11

There'll be a bit of hand-wringing then forgotten about, until the next time.

If the Sandy Hook massacre where 20 primary school children and six teachers couldn't bring about some sort of reform/restriction, I can't see anything happening soon.

loopyloo Tue 03-Oct-17 07:55:20

Think the Americans should chip away slowly at this. State by State.
Step 1 all guns should be registered. This would give valuable information about the situation and show the correlation between gun numbers and deaths.
Step2 in 3 years time. All machine guns banned... and so on
But frankly the Americans can do what they like but no sympathy from me about the results.
